We need volunteers to help with the 2024 JEXA Awards Gala on November 9th at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles. Our non-profit promotes jazz excellence by providing music education grants to students in need; with your support, we can increase the number of music grants we offer this year.

One that stood out for me was Dianne Reeves’ tribute to JEXA Humanitarian Award Recipient, the incomparable Dionne Warwick. Do you remember that?!

I think my favorite gallery might be the one called "mixing and mingling" because it captures the joy and excitement that took place off the stage. Or maybe the red carpet photos? Then again the shots taken of the show are pretty incredible.
There are literally hundreds of photos across several galleries. Our event photographer Craig Cochrane, and our red carpet photographer Hugh Williams, captured moments that I think are worth reliving.

I’m at a loss for words about the sudden passing of Wayne Spencer. He was my Boardwalk 11 buddy and brought me into the community. Rest in power, my friend. You will be missed.

Educating Young Minds (EYM) is a comprehensive nonprofit with a learning center located in the heart of the Crenshaw Corridor. For more than 35 years this organization has provided a series of multidiscipline, academic, emotional, and social/behavioral programs to underserved, low-income, marginalized youth from Pre-K to 12th grade.

Samara Joy's double GRAMMY win is a beautiful event for the jazz community and young musicians and singers who are excited to perform and study this music. Our jazz nonprofit, JEXA Awards, is giving $1000 grants to jazz-minded youth in underserved communities throughout Southern California who like Samara want to keep this rich tradition alive.

JEXA AWARDS UPDATE!
Due to unavoidable circumstances, THE JEXA Awards Gala scheduled for November 20th will now take place on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at the Cicada Club. Previously purchased tickets will be honored—formal Invitation and details to follow.
The jazz emotions need their own interpretation from the listener. And the listeners each have different emotions and interpretations than the musicians. That’s why jazz is so emotional.
It makes you think back to the old days. A cozy afternoon somewhere or a wedding or a movie. It can be different for everyone. It is a genre that has produced great legends and now further inspires the world.
The swing era also helped jazz gain respectability; it was the final big blossoming of jazz before its time of harmonic exploration. 🎺🎷
Swing, at its best, attained the art of improvising in which contemporary harmonic conventions mitigated its composers’ artistic originality. 🙌
