Beer in Florida

Beer in Florida Chronicling the booming craft beer community in the Sunshine State since 2010.

Gerard Walen blogs about beer happenings, news and events from Pensacola to Key West as he chronicles Florida's rise from the sticky morass of the fizzy yellow lager that used to cover the peninsula.

After five incredible years of serving this amazing community, it is with a heavy heart that we announce the closing of Oviedo Brewing Company. The ongoing economic challenges, rising costs, and the lasting impacts of the pandemic have made it increasingly difficult for us to continue. We have fought tirelessly to keep our doors open, but the financial and emotional toll has been overwhelming. The effort to push forward has mentally drained us, and despite our best attempts, we have reached the difficult decision to close. Our last day of operation will be February 28th.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude to all our loyal members, guests, and friends who have supported us throughout this journey. Your love for craft beer and community has meant the world to us.

To our incredible staff—words cannot fully express our appreciation for you. You have been the heart and soul of Oviedo Brewing Company, bringing passion, dedication, and warmth to everything you do. You have made this more than just a business; you have created a welcoming space where friendships were formed, memories were made, and great beer was shared. Your hard work, resilience, and unwavering commitment have been the backbone of this company, and we are forever grateful. We are proud to have worked alongside such an exceptional team, and we will always cherish the bond we’ve built together. We ask that in the coming weeks, you continue to support our amazing staff as they transition into new opportunities.

To the Florida establishments who proudly served our beer—thank you for believing in us and sharing our brews with your customers. Your support helped us reach beyond our taproom and into the hands of so many beer lovers across the state. We are truly grateful for the partnerships we’ve built along the way.

To our community and our vendors—you have embraced us like family, and for that, we are truly thankful. Your support and kindness have made this journey unforgettable.

While this chapter is coming to a close, we will always cherish the memories we’ve made together. We hope you’ll join us in raising one last glass before we say goodbye.

With gratitude and love,
Oviedo Brewing Company

BREAKING NEWS

It is with a heavy heart that we share some bittersweet news with all of you. After almost a decade of serving this beloved community of Wynwood, and everyone that traveled from afar to visit our taproom, we will be closing its doors. This decision has not come easily, but the ever-changing landscape of the neighborhood has presented challenges that we can no longer navigate effectively.

We want to extend our deepest gratitude for all your unwavering support and loyalty over the years. Your presence and enthusiasm have been the heartbeat of our taproom and each Wakefest that we’ve hosted. We have cherished every pint, and every story told within these walls. It has been a privilege to be part of such a vibrant community.

While we will be saying goodbye to our current location, we want you to know that our passion for brewing remains as strong as ever. We will continue to craft the same quality beers you have come to love and will stay actively engaged in the community through events, tap takeovers, and collaborations around the city.

To all the current and past employees- Your time and dedication to JWB have been invaluable, and your contributions have played a significant role in shaping our success, creating the vibrant atmosphere that have become the entire vibe of our establishment and brand. Whether you were with JWB for a season or for several years, your presence and hard work have left a lasting impact on our team and the community we’ve built together. THANK YOU for all you’ve ever done for JWB.

We’re excited to share that we are already working on finding a new location what will allow us to serve you even better. We’ll be keeping you updated on our progress and can’t wait to welcome you our new home when the time comes.

Thank you once again for being such a crucial part of our journey. We will miss you dearly, but we look forward to seeing you at our upcoming events, and of course, at our new location in the near future.

Our last weekend open will be October 26-27

Until then, we do have some special events lined up to make our farewell a memorable one. – STAY TUNED

After 8 years in Pompano Beach, our rental rate is scheduled to increase to a rate that is not sustainable for a brewery. We have made the decision to close our doors at the end of July.

Increased operating costs, coupled with a changing beer climate have made things increasingly difficult for a brewery that focuses exclusively on mixed culture beer aged in barrels. We believed in the vision the city of Pompano had for our neighborhood, but the issues with crime and vagrancy have increased, all while the neighborhood remains mostly vacant. We had hoped our neighborhood would be filled with bars and restaurants like we were promised by the city eight years ago, but there has been no progress. Multiple businesses have been “coming soon” for more than 5 years, but have not begun construction. Our lease does not allow us to serve food or have food trucks, making it difficult to get foot traffic. Paying premium retail rental rates while selling most of our beer out of state and overseas just isn’t sustainable.

Despite our challenges, I’m incredibly grateful for the support from our loyal local customers, as well as those who have supported us from a distance purchasing our beer in bars and bottle shops around the world. Most brewers get to make a few beers they like, and in today’s weird beer climate, a lot of brewers make mostly beers they do not like. I am extremely fortunate to have been able to focus exclusively on beers that are important to me. I’ve created over 240 beers at Odd Breed. I’ve been allowed to let my creativity run wild, and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being able to experiment.

I’ve been in this industry for nearly two decades, and I’m still as passionate about beer as I’ve ever been. A lot of that is due to the support and enthusiasm of our fans. Thank you!
As we wind down operations, we will have one more new bottle release, and plenty of vintage bottles available for sale. I hope to see you guys at the taproom before we close, and thank you for allowing me to create beers with Flavor From Fermentation.

Cigar City Brewing has apparently cut a lot of brewery employees. Including original brewer Wayne Wambles, under its new owners. It’s a shame.
Here’s the story of how I first met its beer.

Dear Cigar City Jai Alai IPA, Happy Anniversary. Though I often think of the first time we met, the good robots of Facebook Memories reminded me this morning of exactly when it was with the following post. Ten years ago. … Continue reading →
