Metallica's Cliff Burton was not your typical metal bassist. His studies in jazz and classical influenced the band's compositions, as displayed in the instrumental Orion. That song is the stuff of legend, and I made this video to deconstruct my favorite riff from the piece. It displays how the minor scale works together with power chords and fun rhythm patterns (like the double tresillo) to form an engaging and epic moment. There's more to this song to analyze, but that's for a different video!

Altered dominant chords are the secret sauce to creating complex and rich jazz progressions. This topic can be very confusing but I've tried my best to explain them and demonstrate their usefulness in this quick lesson. Once you're done watching, you should have a good grasp of what an altered dominant actually is, but more importantly, how can you start using them in your own compositions!

Keep in mind that this is a beginners lesson on the topic, but the strategies and techniques we go through here will apply to all the advanced chords as well. And of course, those advanced chords are all taught in the Chord Progression Codex 😉

I think the reason a lot of people hate music theory is because the first thing they're taught in classes is how to name intervals, and that stuff is pretty boring. It doesn't immediately translate into songwriting or better understanding of music, it's just memorizing rules.

However, it is a topic you -must- know if you want to easily navigate the more complex areas of music theory! So I tried to make it as painless as possible in this video.
