2024 Gary Air Show Preview!!

The Gary Air Show is this Saturday and Sunday but savvy locals know that air shows don't just happen- there's a practice run on Friday! Our Aviation and Local Events reporter Chris Zervos lugged his gear down to Marquette Park (the streets are already shut down so that traffic control can be rehearsed as well) to bring you a sneak peak of this weekend's aerobatic spectacular!

Last week we went to Coppolillo’s Italian Steakhouse in Crown Point with our cameras to talk with Owner-Executive Chef Steve Coppolillo to find out the 411 on the ambiance and uniqueness of the menu of the new place.

"What I Learned As a First-Time Explosives Shopper"

Far from the Illinois border, there’s a stretch of highway seemingly dedicated to housing large warehouses full of bottle rockets, Roman candles, sparklers, and firecrackers. Inarguably, the most noticeable is Shelton Fireworks: a giant red building that looks like a barn that no barn maker would ever have designed. It’s too big to photograph without a drone, so here’s the sign out front in case you go looking for it and somehow miss the giant barn.

Our Weekend Correspondent / Photojournalist Chris Zervos got married this year. In addition to his new duties maintaining air conditioners and removing/installing toilets, he soon found that his duties as a husband include the purchase of explosives to entertain guests on Independence Day.

This week, he brought us along for his first foray into the world of domestic munitions. Enjoy!

Our wandering photojournalist Chris Zervos "discovered" the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk this week. Seriously, he'd never seen it before.

In all fairness it's pretty well hidden for a beach and people who grew up in the Region are typically conditioned not to go poking around near steel mills they don't have permission to visit.

So check out this "secret beach" for yourself and make your way to the shore!

Back in April our photojournalist Chris Zervos took you to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore to visit a patch of forest known as the Heron Rookery Trail. The trail is known for its beautiful spring flowers, but according to the National Park Service the Great Blue Herons that once nested there “moved on to new nesting grounds after 60 years nesting” there.

Chris went out and found them. Check out his photos from the super-secret place that Northwest Indiana’s Great Blue Heron population lays their eggs!
