Singlewide Studio (EQP'T DETAILS BELOW DESCRIPTION)

Singlewide Studio is a comfortable, professionally-equipped recording studio in my home.
(4)

(NOTE: Singlewide Studio is still lterally "under construction" - Stay tuned!)
This page serves to show pictures of the available space, plus information about the studio's equipment and capabilities, and links to audio samples. My name is Scottish McMillan, and after about 25 years as a singing, songwriting guitar slinger, most recently as the founder of the Chicago-area rock duo Right Rongly,

and almost a decade as a live-event audio engineer, I now focus largely on being a recording studio audio engineer. Singlewide Studio is located in Crossville, Tennessee, in an unincorporated area a few miles north of Crossville city limits. And yes, it IS a single-wide manufactured home, about 2/3 of which is a recording studio. The studio’s cozy feel allows players to relax and create comfortably in a "living-room" type environment, while attaining superb audio production quality, and quite affordably. Overnight stays can be accommodated with enough warning, but random overnighters can occasionally be accommodated. Unlike the super-polished coldness of so many "downtown" studios, this place feels like home, because it IS home -- MY home -- and I'm happy to be able to help other artists have fun making recordings they can be proud of! While players are welcome to bring whatever instruments or other equipment they please, Singlewide Studio’s greatest strength is its “plug and play” jam/recording setup. The “Living Room” includes a full drum kit, two different modeling guitar amps, and a bass combo amp, as well as a few decent electric and acoustic guitars and basses. ALL aforementioned amplifiers can be played “direct” and silently, allowing “live” jams to be recorded without ANY amps bleeding into the drum mics. If you prefer your own amp, it may still be possible to "go direct" using certain equipment. This gear is typically all set up and “ready-to-go”, so unless you need to switch something out or add something, you can just bring your drumsticks, guitars, basses and foot pedals, and get right into it!

---------------------------------------------------------------
THE ROOMS:

“LIVING ROOM” (15’ X 16’) Record/Playback Room - most bands can fit all at once, including drums

“ISOLATION ROOM” (8’ x 10’) - For isolating amps or singers when necessary

“CONTROL ROOM” (9’ x 15’) – This is where the PC and my control equipment lives, but there’s plenty of room for tracking vocals, instrument solos, etc., as well as listening back on the Control Room couch, when convenient.

"Influendo" is the latest song from the latest project I'm involved in, called "unincorporated". Below is a link to listen/download the song for a very limited time - get it while you can! After that, it will be available on all major music playing and music purchasing platforms. :D

Like making weird noises into a microphone? That's my specialty. Call me. This is a Recording Club, not a "business", but Club membership is private, economical, and effective. ;)

If you half-care about edgy, "progressive" rock and roll, thoughtful lyrics, and weird time signatures, but you prefer to hear a bit more acoustic guitar, well here ya go! The whole record was recorded almost entirely using a dreadnought acoustic/electric guitar and drum kit ONLY, minus a small part of two different tracks where I had a hard-body "acoustic" guitar (Yamaha Silent Guitar) or a Danelectro Baritone electric guitar. Thinking about printing some vinyl for this one, since I've heard several suggestions to do so. Let me know if you might buy the vinyl, and I'll think about pressing it.

Hey, Crossville/Cookeville/Sparta/Wherever musicians - Singlewide Studio is nearing completion, BUT this is an opportunity for one very lucky musical act (preferably an average-size band) to come out and spend a day recording here FOR FREE! What''s the catch, you ask? I need to dial this whole place in, to be honest. We'll be checking connections, setting headphone levels, etc.... BUT this is a great opportunity to get a FREE DEMO recording of some your music, for the low, low price of dealing with my bu****it. Message me if you're interested. Schedule is fairly flexible. :)

As Singlewide Studio is not yet up and running at its new Crossville location, I wanted to remind any Middle-Tennessee (and beyond?) bands/musicians that I am also a live-event audio engineer with over 15 years of experience (references available). I can run/expand on your own system, or I can bring my own 32-channel, digital PA, which is good for small-to-medium gigs (up to around 500 people, situation-dependent.) I'll work with your budget, within reason, of course. Contact me at VIP-NOT-COOL (spells my ph # -- didn't want to put actual numbers on here). FB messaging is less reliable, as I only check FB messages occasionally.

Sorry if this is a long post, but I've got a lot to tell everyone! :)

In case you didn't already know, I (Scottish McMillan) have permanently moved to a quiet, relatively-unrestricted area of Crossville, Tennessee, and I'm actively fixing up my "new" (old) 1,005 square-foot, 3-bed, 2-bath home, which sits on 3 acres of mostly-wooded land. It's not yet "move-in ready", but there is light at the end of the tunnel. (Hopefully by Spring...?)

The "Studio Shmudio" moniker will eventually be replaced (new name and FB page TBA), and will be a members-only facility.

THE DEAL:
Each ACT (solo or band) must purchase a lifetime membership for just one United States "Silver Eagle" silver dollar, and ALL other payments are to made in this form. HOWEVER, as a gesture of gratitude for joining the Club, first-time clients (bands OR individuals) at the facility will get one free hour of recording for their first session. (FYI, sticking strictly with silver-only payments keeps the facility and its internal activities OUT of any federal or state jurisdiction, and allows me to pass the savings, as well as the "relaxation factor", on to the artist -- no taxes, no vaxes... And masks are NOT allowed here. I just can't deal with such nonsense.)

THE SPACE:
The 15' x 15' "living room" will permanently hold the following equipment, for your enjoyment: A lovely Crush drum kit (5-ply maple, 20"x20" kick, 7"x 13" snare, 10", 12", 14", & 16" toms, Zildjian "A" cymbal set on Yamaha hardware, Zildjian Masters Custom hi-hat / Tama "Iron Kobra" hi-hat stand, a TC Electronic BG250 bass amp, a Fender Mustang III modeling guitar amp, a VOX VT80+ modeling guitar amp, and a mish-mash of stringed and percussion instruments as extra options for performers. This means that you'll typically need only your primary instruments and effects to walk right into a jam/recording session that is up, running, and ready to go at all times.

Staying set-up all the time is how I keep prices down. I have used this gear to make several amazing-sounding albums for several musical acts already, and I'll be happy to let you hear samples anytime. (Of course, you could still bring your own amps, drums, etc, but there may be an up-charge for turning my studio upside-down to accommodate you. So maybe you should check my gear out first...)

The small 8' x 10' bedroom will serve as both an isolation room for vocals and other instruments, and also as a spare bedroom for guests.

The 8.5' x 15' bedroom will be the Control Room, which will also double as a small recording space (vocals, solos, etc.) as well as another spare bedroom for guests.

THE CONTROL ROOM:
Since this move has DECIMATED my life's savings, and as I have NO paying work at the moment, I will soon be selling off some of my super-nice-but-not-super-necessary microphones, preamps and audio interfaces, in favor of using my Behringer X32 Rack digital mixer and S16 digital audio snake (along with a couple of cool preamps I won't be selling) as a recording interface/preamp. With this, the system should accommodate at least 22 simultaneous recording channels, providing at least 6 individual headphone mixes at once. Each musician with a smartphone will be able to download an inexpensive or free app (depending on whether it's IOS or Android) to customize his own headphone mix.
Regarding audio effects, my 1300+ pro-level effects plugins (Waves, Universal Audio, etc.) allow plenty of top-notch "polish". I can record, mix, and master everything right here for a very fair price, or you can take the tracks to your favorite mixing or mastering engineer, if you wish to stay in your "comfort zone".

While this move to Behringer's X32/S16 may be seen by some as a step down in "branding", the quality of my results has proven to be quite competitive with the "luxury" stuff I was using before, even to well-trained ears. Therefore, I assure you that I will be delivering the same high-quality recordings that you would expect from a high-dollar studio, but at a VERY reasonable price.

Before I officially open the studio to the public, I'll be inviting certain close friends over to jam and check the place out, just to show everyone what's up.

So stay tuned!! :)

Our Story

(EQP'T DETAILS BELOW DESCRIPTION) Studio Shmudio is a comfortable, professionally-equipped recording studio in my home. My name is Scottish McMillan, and I'm a longtime Chicago-area musician and pro audio engineer. I am located in Des Plaines, IL, just a three-minute walk from the UP/NW Metra Des Plaines stop, at the edge of the town's scenic "Silk Stocking" neighborhood, named in the early 20th century, due to the wealthy nature of the residents at the time -- it's a really pretty area, and street parking is fairly abundant. Overnight parking is OK in Des Plaines, as there are currently NO street parking "curfews". The cottage's cozy feel allows you and/or your band to relax and create comfortably in a "living-room" type environment, while attaining the finest audio production quality available, at very affordable rates. Stay all day -- order food from various local eateries, enjoy the (non-felonious) indulgences of your choice, and stay overnight, if you wish. Overnight stays can be accommodated, with enough soft surfaces for at least 3, or more, if you don't mind "getting close" - and there are a couple of air mattresses available, if not. Unlike the super-polished coldness of so many "downtown" studios, this place feels like home, because it IS home -- MY home -- and I'm happy to be able to help other artists have fun making recordings they can be proud of! The Control Room is great for recording soloists or duets, who may not need as much space to "stretch out". Booking ONLY this room can be done at a discount, as it doesn't impede other areas of the house. The Living Room is for drums and other larger endeavors, like bands who wish to all play together at once. This room also serves as the Listening Room, with headphone positions available all around the couch and high-quality studio monitors and subwoofer for rockin' your mix out loud and proud, to hear it in the "real world". Headphone mixes can be controlled by each player, through the use of an iPad. Amplifier isolation is, admittedly, NOT Studio Shmudio's strongest suit, BUT I can get the amps far enough away from the drum mics, and from each other, that "amp bleed" can be minimized, if not totally eliminated, so that certain overdubs, should they be required, may be possible, depending on the track in question, of course. Bass and drums are usually no problem to record together, with a "scratch" track of your choice in the headphones, or just a click. Regardless of how decide to record, you'll be sure to get that "downtown sound" for a small-town price! Lastly, I should mention that Studio Shmudio has a full drum kit (Crush 6-pc "Sublime" maple), two modeling guitar amps (Fender Mustang III & Vox VT80+), and a sweet bass amp (tc electronic BG250), as well as a few decent electric and acoustic guitars and basses. Hours are 10am-10pm, by appointment only.
