👉👍🍄Tiny but gorgeous, this brightly colored fungus is well worth a close look. The bright yellow to orangish yellow cap and stem are covered with a granular, powdery coating; the gills are thick, white, and very distant. Cyptotrama asprata is found on the deadwood of all sorts of trees (conifers and hardwoods), and ranges across much of North America--though it is apparently absent in the northwest and on the West Coast.🍄

Edibility of the species is unknown but it is quite beautiful to come across.

🍄 We have fungi to thank for penicillin! 🍄

Many may be familiar with the antibiotic known as penicillin. Did you know that it was produced from a mold that is a fungus? 😯

Around 1929, a doctor in London, England ( Alexander Fleming ) wrote a paper on what he called 'penicillin' which he had derived from the Penicillium notatum mold (now known as Penicillium chrysogenum). It had the ability to kill bacteria. His discovery and research started a chain of events that would lead to the development of many antibiotics that would save countless lives.

The discovery of penicillin, one of the world’s first antibiotics, marks a true turning point in human history. ❤🍄
