Since going back to work full time, I’ve learned even more the importance of living seasonally. It’s ok—I’m not about to go all basic white girl and start talking about Pumpkin Spice Lattes In The Fall.

What I mean is a little more along the lines of Ecclesiastes 3:5- “a time to scatter stones and a time to gather them.” The school year feels a lot like scattering stones for me. Teaching, grading, helping with homework, driving to music lessons, driving to church, driving to practice (so much driving). Scattering food on tables, scattering words on pages, scattering people to places.

There hardly feels time to gather.

Even while homeschooling, my children would tease me about “school mom” vs. “summer mom.”

School Mom is scheduled, orderly, and nutritious.
Summer Mom gives popsicles for breakfast and reads until the wee hours of the morning.
School Mom is scattering stones, but Summer Mom gathers.
Summer Mom gathers folds of fabric into new quilts and ingredients into new recipes. She gathers miles into road trips and messes into memories.

And yes, Summer Mom has been reading late into the wee hours of the morning and I would love to share the latest stories I’ve gathered for you.

Big announcement number 1!

Today, join all of us at Owl’s Nest in saying THANK YOU to Katie Stewart , who is stepping down after two and a half years as COO and Managing Editor. As co-founder of Owl’s Nest, Katie not only helped us get off the ground in our crucial first years, but she helped establish our mission and vision here at “the Nest.” As her work life takes her other places, she will be sorely missed! But she remains a friend of the Nest and in our list of authors as the editor of her fantastic, Owl’s Nest classic ANNE OF GREEN GABLES: ANNOTATED FOR TEEN AND MIDDLE GRADE READERS.

If you’ve appreciated Katie’s work over our founding years, be sure to drop her a message to let her know in the comments! (And pick up a copy of ANNE to support her as she transitions into new work.)

Book Release Updates!

Owing to editorial schedules, we are flip-flopping two of our upcoming releases, which is good news if you are a fan of .author’s Fairytale Collection. We are moving up the release date of SON OF GOLD AND SORROW to this October, and moving back the release date of Book 2 of her Orion Rising series to May of 2025.

SON OF GOLD AND SORROW is the third book in the Fairytale Collection. Preorders open next month!

Summary: Lord James of Peros is selfish, arrogant, and unserious, but he also might just be Princess Aurelia’s only hope of survival against a cruel father and a cursed engagement to a wicked man. Enlisting James to help her comes with its own entanglements, though, not the least of which is her traitorous heart—especially when it turns out James is not nearly as selfish, arrogant, or unserious as she always thought he was. As James struggles alongside Aurelia in the enchanted Black Forest of Ravenia, she comes to realize that the one person she has been using to thwart her curse has become the one person she cannot live without.

It’s Meet the Author Monday!

Today, get to know a bit more about Stephanie Ebert , editor of LITTLE WOMEN: ANNOTATED FOR TEEN AND MIDDLE GRADE READERS, coming this December!

Owl’s Nest: When did you start writing?
Stephanie Ebert: I have always been writing. My earliest books were handwritten stories I would write for my younger brothers for Christmas and birthdays. My parents were always very supportive and would sometimes read my stories out loud at bedtime, but I found it super embarrassing, because once it was read out loud I would hear everything I wanted to change!

ON: That’s awesome! What are some of your favorite middle grade or teen books?

SE: I love The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare. Since I grew up between South Africa and America, I could relate to her main character, who is forced to move from sunny Barbados to the cold North East in the USA. I also loved Anne of Green Gables, Little Women (of COURSE!), and anything by Madeline L’Engle, although A Ring of Endless Light is my favorite. Andrew Peterson’s Wingfeather Saga, anything by C.S. Lewis. Anything by Kate DiCamillo makes me cry, in a good way.

ON: So many fantastic ones! What was the inspiration for editing LITTLE WOMEN for teen and middle grade readers?
SE: I just absolutely love Little Women and have read it so many times that I almost have it memorized. I think the characters are so spunky and relatable, and they have enough depth that every time I read it again, a new aspect speaks to me.  I’m always trying to get people to read Little Women, but because it was written so many years ago, some people get hung up on some of the old-fashioned language or historical details.

ON: Thank you so much for telling everyone a little more about yourself, Steph! We can’t wait for everyone to read this new edition of LITTLE WOMEN!

LITTLE WOMEN: ANNOTATED FOR TEEN AND MIDDLE GRADE READERS releases this December and will make a perfect holiday gift for the book lovers in your life!
