“Dear Young Nebraskan” by Jeff Yost

My sincere hope is that I am just one of many people in your life saying this: we need and want you here in Nebraska. Generation Z will have a massive impact in our state, especially in rural Nebraska. You have come of age in a world of constant change and technological advancement, shifting like the braids of the Platte River under a powerful current. Your formative years unfolded amid a pandemic, recessions and political unrest – but also abundance and cooperation.

You have, with technology you’ve known since childhood, forged new forms of connection by cultivating communities across national and international
borders. Navigating a world in a permanent state of flux has made you resilient and inquisitive. It’s unlikely that the rate of change will slow anytime soon.

Your adaptability will be an incredible asset in the decades ahead. Gen Z and Gen Alpha are the most diverse generations of Nebraskans in recent history. With that comes a predisposition to inclusivity that can change the long-held misconceptions people have about our state. For Nebraska to have a future, it must be a place where everyone belongs.

For you, this is an obvious foundation for success, and you aren’t afraid to have your voice heard on the matter. Your curiosity and insistence on innovation will carry our state into the future. Have dreams of starting your own business? I speak with homegrown entrepreneurs every day who credit their success to community support, something they say they never would have found in a big city. Many of them are young, fresh out of college or still enrolled in classes, but their communities have welcomed their dreams to build something new and contribute to shared wellbeing.

Gen Z, you crave purpose, not just a paycheck. The research shows young Nebraskans and other members of your generation are values driven, perhaps more so than any generation before you. You are attracted to work – be it paid or volunteer – that lights your fire. In Greater Nebraska, the opportunities for making a tangible impact are abundant. In fact, we work with thousands of volunteers of all ages who share your desire to leave the world better than you found it. Trust us, they are looking for bright minds and passionate hearts like yours to lead the way.

But perhaps your generation’s most admirable quality is your authenticity – something that will serve you well in the leadership roles you fill in the future. Your awareness of mental health is long overdue and something that would serve those before you well.

Nebraska Community Foundation and its network of affiliated funds hope to play a part in empowering your generation. Over the last five years, we’ve sponsored dozens of Hometown Interns across our state. These college students return to their hometowns for the summer and dive headfirst into discovering the hidden potential of their places. Many have returned to the program after their first year because they found it so eye-opening.

One of those young Nebraskans is Jadyn Schultis of Diller in Southeast Nebraska. Jadyn joined the program in 2022 and has returned in both 2023 and 2024. In her first year, supervisors challenged her and another intern to innovate ways to involve youth in community building efforts.

Together, they created the Diller Serviceship Camp, an event that educates elementary students on Diller’s history and assets before asking them to generate their own ideas for projects that could make Diller even better. The camp has been a major success for Diller, and it’s broadened Jadyn’s horizons regarding the role she can play in crafting the future of her hometown.

Jadyn tells us she now feels like a changemaker and leader for communities throughout the state, thanks in part to her internships. That’s exactly the feeling we want young Nebraskans across the state to experience. Dear Young Nebraskan, know that we – your elders – see ourselves in you. We too once felt misunderstood and underappreciated.

Sometimes our eagerness for change was met with doubt and negativity. But without change, there cannot be progress. You will not be alone in this pursuit. Community leaders throughout this state are ready to listen, extend an invitation and make space for you and your peers.

Dear Young Nebraskan, stick with it. Our future depends on you.

Together a Greater Nebraska.

The Crofton Community Club recently added to the beautification efforts in Crofton’s South Park by purchasing and planting a new tree. The City of Crofton had recently removed a number of large, older trees that were beginning to die. A maple was planted just west of the basketball courts. “We are thankful to the Community Club members who make donations like this possible,” said organizers.

The 18U Crofton Lady Warriors softball team won the USA Softball of Nebraska Class D State Tournament during the weekend of July 12-14. This marked the first softball state championship in Crofton girls’ softball history.

After starting the season 5-10, the 18U girls turned it on at the right time as they were a blistering 13-1 to finish off their season, including winning their final twelve games of the season.

The team’s run for the title started in late June as they went on a 7-game tear leading into the state tournament. This included winning against Verdigre and Osmond, winning the league tournament, and then defeating Hartington. They continued rolling into the state tournament where they won all five of their games, including versus the 2024 Flames of Nebraska (13-6–Friday), Hebron Titans (8-4–Saturday), Holdrege Eagles 18U (10-4–Saturday), Ponca (5-3–Sunday), and Ponca (9-5–Sunday).

“Our team put it all together offensively and defensively throughout the state tournament,” Lady Warriors Coach Tony Guenther said. He and fellow coach Lonnie Tramp watched as their team had an offensive outburst over the weekend. The team scored five or more runs in its final 12 games. In the state tournament alone, the 18U hit .386, totaling 51 hits in five games.

They ended up with a .438 on-base percentage in 147 at-bats. This was roughly 64 baserunners, not including those who reached on errors. 45 of those turned into runs. Caitlin Guenther pitched every inning for her team, recording all of the wins for her teams. In their first game against the 2024 Flames of Nebraska, the team got off to an auspicious start in the top of the first when Annabelle Poppe singled in a run.

However, the Flames rallied to take the lead a 2-1 lead the bottom of the first. They tacked on another run in the bottom of the second to make it 3-1. The Warriors retook the lead 5- 3 thanks to a 4-run top of the third. Caitlin Guenther, Kaylee Mauch, and Kayden Acuff each had RBI hits. The Warrios took control of the game in the top of the fifth, scoring six runs. While the Warriors got RBI doubles from both Poppe and Megan Tramp, they also benefited from from three errors and a wild pitch.

Overall, the Warriors had 13 hits, six of which were by Megan Tramp and Caitlin Guenther alone. Poppe and Mauch had two hits each. Rebecca Leader, Emily Guenther, Kayden Acuff, Leila Barta, and Ryley Arens all added a hit a piece. In game two, the Lady Warriors held off the Hebron Tigers 8-4. The Titans started off the game with a 3-0 lead in the top of the first; however, the Lady Warriors scored six runs in the bottom of the second to take a 6-3 lead, thanks in part to Megan Tramp’s 2-run triple.

Caitlin Guenther had three hits including a home run. She fell a triple short of the cycle (home run, double, single). Poppe also had three hits. Ellie Tramp and Emily Guenther both had two hits as well. Mauch and Leader each added a single. Game 3 turned out to be pivotal for the Warriors’ championship run. They faced the Holdrege Eagles who had beaten each of their first two tournament opponents by at least ten runs. The Warriors came out on top 10-4, scoring eight runs in the first three innings. Caitlin Guenther started the scoring in the the top of the first inning with a home run to center field.

The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the first at 1-1. However, the Warriors had an answer with seven consecutive runs. In the top of the second, Leila Barta singled in two runs before the Eagles allowed another run on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. The Warriors continued with three runs in the third on a costly errors. The Warriors then added two more runs as they held the Eagles’ offense in check for the remainder of the contest. Overall, the Warriors had eight hits, including two by Caitlin Guenther and Leader.

On Sunday, the Warriors advanced to play Ponca to see who would be the first team into the championship round. This proved to be the Warriors most daunting challenge of the whole tournament. They found themselves down 3-0 after the four-and-a-half innings. However, in the top of the fifth, the Warriors strung together fourhits, including a 3-run triple byMegan Tramp, which helpedthem take a 5-3 lead.

The Warriors then held Poncain the bottom half of the inningto seal the win. They had 10 hits in the game, including Ellie Tramp (2), Poppe (2), Tramp (1), Caitlin (1), Mauch (1), Leader (1), Emily Guenther (1), and Barta (1). This win all but cemented the Warriors’ title, considering that Ponca had to turn around and play Wakefield. The winner of that game would then have to play their third consecutive game and beat a rested Warriors team twice before securing the state championship.

Ponca emerged victorious against Wakefield, but the Lady Warriors jumped to a 3-1 lead after the first inning. Guenther then hit another home run in the top of the third inning. In the fifth, the Warriors built their lead to 9-3 after Rylie Arens hit a two-run home run. They ultimately held off Ponca 9-5. They had twelve hits with six girls having a multi-hit game: Poppe (2 singles), Megan Tramp (single/double), Caitlin Guenther (2 singles, 1 home run), Leader (single/double), Arens (single, home run), and Barta (2 singles).

The championship marked a culmination of hard work throughout the season and throughout the years. This group of girls essentially built back up the softball program, which hadn’t had an 18U group for over a decade. “We appreciate this group of girls who stayed with softball to get the 18U team back up and going in Crofton,” Coach Tony Guenther said.

Within the past four years, the team went from not reaching state and having two girls get picked up by Ponca (2021) to playing in the Class C state tournament (2022, 2023). Kayden Acuff, Rebecca Leader, Megan Tramp, and Emma Wuebben played their final games as Crofton Lady Warriors softball players.

Cameryn Fiscus, Caitlin Guenther, Kaylee Mauch, and Ellie Tramp all return for their last season of eligibility next year. Riley Arens, Emily Guenther, and Annabelle Poppe have two seasons left, while Leila Barta, Ella Reifenrath, and Alexa Suing each have three seasons of eligibility remaining. “We want to thank everyone who supported us throughout this year and made it a fun and successful season,” Guenther said.

07/13/2024

The thunder rolled and in perfect timing, just as the last Wynot batter went down on strikes looking at the top of the ninth inning, threatening rain clouds opened up and poured onto a large crowd gathered for the big game. The storm postponed the planned community fireworks display to the following night, but the Bluejays were able to celebrate Independence Day week with a big win, 10-2, against their South Central League Highway 12 rival, Wynot.

That win last Wednesday night, July 3 and a pair of victories against winless Irene in the SCL leaves the Jays in a solid third place in SCL standings with a league record of 9-4. In their last five games, the Jays have outscored their opponents 52-6 and won five straight SCL games, including two shutouts to close out their June schedule.

That leaves only one away game against Yankton left on the regular season schedule going into District play later in the month. James Kaiser did double duty on the night, going 3-4 at bat and handling pitching duties for the Jays through seven and a third innings against the Expos. He allowed just two runs on three hits, including a solo homer by Wynot’s Peyton Wieseler, before Zach Hegge came in to close.

Once again, the Jays were stellar on defense with no errors, but the bats were working too. Kaiser had two doubles and a triple, while Austin Tramp and Zach Hegge had a double each.

The third inning was the big one for Crofton, starting with a double by Kaiser that scored Trent Jansen. That’s when Zach Hegge grounded into a fielder’s choice, but Roy Knapp and Justin Potts both scored on one of Wynot’s seven errors on the night. Two more runs got across for the Jays in the third, giving Crofton the 5-0 lead. The Jays would score another three runs in the fourth and scatter out a run in the seventh and eighth to gather the commanding lead and the eventual win.

The Jays close out their SCL season this Sunday, July 14 at Yankton. Right now, only Tabor at 10-1 and Yankton at 10-2 stand ahead of the Jays in SCL standings. The District 6B tourney begins in Lesterville this year on July 25 and runs through Aug. 3. The South Dakota State Amatuer baseball tourney will be in Mitchell in early August.

07/09/2024

The Crofton Lady Warriors 12U softball team finished tied for 13th in the USA Softball of Nebraska Class C State Tournament in Hastings during the weekend of June 28-30.

The team played great in their first game (Friday at 3:30), holding a 2-1 lead against W.D.S.A (Wahoo) into the bottom of the fifth. Camry Michael pitched well for four innings allowing one run and scattering a few hits. The girls’ defense was on point as Baileigh Sailer had an outfield assist at third and the Warriors turned a 1-3-6 double play where Ella LaCroix made a snap throw from first to second base to backpick a Wahoo runner.

Offensively, LaCroix knocked in a run with an RBI double and Camry Michael stole home on a delayed steal where she was bold enough to steal home on her own. Otherwise, the team struggled to put the ball in play, racking up nine strikeouts. The dugout was rocking and everyone shared a sense of confidence.

However, that feeling dissipated gradually in the bottom of the fifth as Wahoo hitters kept finding holes to hit the ball through, scoring nine runs and ending the game before the Warriors could even bat. In fact, the game was on the “8 after 5” mercy rule before the end of the inning.

After this loss on Friday afternoon, the Lady Warriors played the North Platte Lady Jags and fell 7-4. Again, the girls held an early lead as Camry Michael hit an inside- the-park home run in the top of the first inning, but the Lady Jags stormed back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first.

The Warriors added two more runs in the top of the third, but they were answered with three runs by the Jags in the bottom of the inning. Crofton was held scoreless in the top of the third while the Jags tacked on two more runs. Crofton tried to rally in the top of the fourth, but could only muster one run. In the end, the Warriors had a good effort, but walks and defensive mistakes haunted them throughout the game. Combined, the Crofton pitchers walked eight hitters in three innings.

Offensively, the Warriors had four hits, including the one from Michael, one by LaCroix, Sailer, and Grace Morrison. Layla Foxhoven and Lauren Connot each knocked in a run. Michael, LaCroix, Hetzel, and McCoy each scored a run.

This loss faced the 12U girls against the Falls City Travellers on Saturday morning, which turned out to be the Lady Warriors’ lone win of the tournament. LaCroix had four RBI on three hits (two doubles), and Michael had three RBI on two hits, including a two-run inside-the-park homer. Avery Arens also added two hits and an RBI. Grace Morrison and Baileigh Sailer each added hits. Sailer also walked twice and scored three runs. Michael pitched a great game and was supported well by her teammates on defense.

On Saturday afternoon, the Warriors competed against Fearless 12U Wahl (Kearney) and were eliminated from tournament contention with a 7-2 loss. Kearney held the Warriors scoreless in the top of the first before gouging them for three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-0 lead. The Warriors answered with a run of their own in the top of the second, but gave up three more in the bottom of the inning.

Again, Crofton answered with a run in the top of the third. However, after scoring another run in the bottom of the inning, Kearney was given the victory as the 75 minutes allotted for the game expired while they were hitting. Again, pitching and defense were the stories for Crofton as Kearney either put the ball in play in parts of the field not occupied by Crofton defenders or the Crofton defenders could not consistently get outs on balls put in play that they had to range to get to.

Offensively, the Lady Warriors had two runs on five hits (Michael 2, Sailer 1, LaCroix 1, and Bella Hetzell 1). They scored both runs on wild pitches. Morrison and LaCroix scored the two runs for the Warriors. Morrison, LaCroix, and Foxhoven all walked. It was a tough ending to an otherwise fun and impressive season. There was a tremendous amount of improvement from each girl, much of which came from optional off-season workouts the girls were willing to sacrifice their time to attend.

The plain truth is that every team at the tournament had a pitcher who could throw strikes with velocity, hitters who could put the ball in play to put pressure on opposing defenses, baserunners who were aggressive, and a defense who could make routine plays.

For our team to be an elite group among this type of competition, we are going to have to remain together, continue driving forward, and get better in these areas. With a renewed effort and consistent work habits in the coming months and years, the girls have a chance to put themselves in a position to reach this level.
