7/29: A COLD START.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/29: A cold clear night with lows for CB dropping to the freezing mark showed just how dry the air has become in this southwestern flow. Temperatures will rebound for a huge swing so make sure you have plenty of layers but today will be another day a lot like yesterday with sunny skies and gusting winds into the afternoon.

Temperatures: Lows plummeted overnight reaching 32 for Crested Butte and 41 for Gunnison. Highs will rebound to 77 for CB and 83 for Gunni. Lows tonight will likely be cold again with the same factors in play.

Outlook: A trough moving in from the northwest will hold at or north of the CO/WY boarder alternately pressing the southern high back into eastern TX. This keeps us sandwiched in the middle with a dry slot out of the west southwest moving a hot dry flow through. This remains the trend through the week with models now holding off on the afternoon showers initially forecast for Tuesday and Thursday but don’t be surprised if that pops up again.

7/28: INTO THE DRY SLOT.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/28: Drier air in this southwestern flow has taken over and we are seeing significantly drier precipitable water levels in GJ this morning. This will limit any convective potential with a dry sunny day with just a few clouds into the afternoon and gusting winds building with the heat of the day.

Temperatures: Drier air allowed lows to drop with Gunni at 43 and 37 for CB. Highs will reach 83 for Gunni and 77 for CB. Lows tonight will look about the same as last night.

Outlook: This dry slot that has formed will hold strong through the better part of the week with some small changes as it drifts north or south. This will allow for a glancing blow of weak waves that may add some fuel for isolated thundershowers but hot and dry will be the trend. So far Tuesday and Thursday afternoons look like they have the best convective potential but expect changes. Otherwise, hot and dry will be the trend with gusting winds through at least the beginning of the week.

7/27: DRIER AIR MOVING IN.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/27: We have been seeing remnants from nocturnal convection pushing through to the north on the other side of the divide early as the end of this last shot of moisture clears. We will see sunny skies through noon but there is still plenty of fuel for scattered afternoon thundershowers. Plan on a quick sweet spot through the middle of the day but an active afternoon with thundershowers likely.

Temperatures: Lows dropped to 44 for CB and 51 for Gunni. Highs will gain slightly on yesterday to 81 for Gunni and 76 for CB. Lows tonight will cool a few more degrees with drier air.

Outlook: High pressure sets up in the southwest and a dry trough to the north will keep the southwestern flow dominating through the beginning of the week. Temperatures will rebound steadily and we will see significantly drier air closing down the afternoon thundershower potential through Wednesday morning. By Wednesday afternoon a slow trickle of moisture return with convective showers again entering the picture.

7/26: SLOWER MOVING COOLER SHOWERS.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/26: We have seen the pattern turn to the southwest overnight with regional satellite imagery showing moisture moving through UT. We are seeing heaver cloud cover early which will slow the convective potential for storms producing cooler waves of slower moving showers. Localized heavy rains including small hail and lightning will remain possible into the afternoon and this will also help knock down any remaining smoke.

Temperatures: Lows were mild with the clouds at 45 for CB and 55 for Gunni. Highs will be cooler holding to 80 for Gunni and 74 for CB. Lows tonight will cool again.

Outlook: The eastward progression of this flow from the southwest is being slowed by a blocking front in the Midwest but skies will be clearing early Saturday. Sunny skies and remnant moisture will fuel afternoon thundershowers worth planning for but we clear into Sunday with models keeping us dry into the new week. No thundershowers Sunday may be overly optimistic so be prepared if you are headed up high.

7/25: SOME RAIN TO CLEAR THE SMOKE.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/25: Satellite imagery shows moisture lifting into UT from the southwest thar will move the drier and smokier northern flow off to the east. This will mean increasing moisture in our area through the day with clouds by noon turning to thundershowers as the day progresses. Look for wetter conditions through late afternoon and this evening but it will knock down the smoke.

Temperatures: Lows dropped to 45 for Gunni and 39 for CB. Highs will climb early to 77 for CB and 84 for Gunni but cool with increasing clouds. Lows tonight will be warmer with insulating clouds.

Outlook: The brunt of this surge of southern moisture moves through Friday and we will see the potential for showers early and thundershowers into the afternoon. Clouds will limit the convective potential so expect slower moving cooler systems. Saturday will bring a drying trend but enough moisture will remain for afternoon thundershowers. As always stay prepared but we look dry Sunday through the beginning of the new week.

7/24: MORE SMOKE FROM THE NORTH.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/24: The northern flow is continuing to pump heat and smoke in with another hazy morning. Look for conditions a lot like yesterday with just the slight chance at isolated thundershowers. This haze moderates the temperatures so plan on hot highs but these will likely hold a couple degrees short of the initial forecast.

Temperatures: Lows dropped to 38 degrees for CB and 44 for Gunni. Highs will reach 84 for Gunni and 77 for CB. Lows tonight will hold around the same as last night.

Outlook: The pattern starts to shift early Thursday with a trough moving into the northwest and pivoting the northern flow around to the west. This will help pinch off the smoke and pull pacific moisture in by the afternoon for more active conditions. This increase in moisture will stick with us into Friday with models waffling a little on how consistent the moisture will be. Be prepared for thundershowers throughout the day but also periods of sun. Afternoon thundershowers remain possible Saturday afternoon but we dry up to close out the weekend.

7/23: HEAT AND SMOKE FROM THE NORTH.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/23: We saw another big drop in the precipitable water readings from GJ this morning and fuel will be limited for afternoon thundershowers. Unfortunately, we have traded that moisture for smoke and an isolated thunder cell or two can’t be completely counted out but air quality will be the greater concern.

Temperatures: Lows have stayed cold with the dry air at 36 for CB and 43 for Gunni. Highs will gain to 76 for CB and 81 for Gunni. Lows tonight will stay cooler.

Outlook: This high pressure holding over the Great Basin continues to pump in drier heat through Wednesday but by Thursday we see changes. Expect just isolated thundershowers Wednesday with more sun early Thursday but then the pattern turns as a trough drops in from the northwest. The flow ultimately turns to the southwest with a monsoonal surge serving up wetter conditions Thursday afternoon with Friday still looking like the wettest day of the week with some showers possible early and then an active afternoon.

The Buck Moon
A little later than I had planned due to clouds but not a bad place to spend some time!

07/22/2024

7/22: A DRY NORTHERN FLOW.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/22: Drier air dropping in from the north brought precipitable water levels down and allowed for a colder overnight low. Less fuel for thundershowers will mean fewer and more isolated cells into the afternoon but they will still exist so be prepared. The northern flow is tapping smoke from fires in WY and UT so expect some haze.

Temperatures: Overnight lows dropped to 36 for CB and 46 for Gunni. Highs will reach 80 for Gunni and 75 for CB. Lows tonight will look about the same as last night.

Outlook: Dry air from this northern flow will hold through Wednesday with daytime highs climbing 5+ degrees while the drier air keeps overnight lows colder. A trough moving out of the pacific will pivot the flow to the southwest on Thursday bringing back a surge of monsoonal moisture with afternoon thundershowers thickening for a wetter day Friday. This looks like the one variable day in the forecast but expect changes.

7/21: A DRIER BLEND BREWING.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/21: Drier air is starting to drop in on the northwestern flow and we will see more sunshine today but conditions are still ripe for thundershowers building with the heat of the day. Look for some scattered clouds early thickening after noon with isolated thundershowers and high gusting winds more likely after 2.

Temperatures: Lows dropped as skies cleared to 43 for CB and 51 for Gunni. Highs will reach 80 for Gunni and 74 for CB. Lows tonight will look about the same or slightly cool with clearer skies.

Outlook: With this high holding down over SoCal and a big low in the Midwest we will see a weaker and less active flow out of the northwest. This will bring clearer skies and milder temperatures through the beginning of the week with afternoon thundershowers remaining a possibility but much more isolated with longer windows of sunshine. By Thursday we start to see some changes with an increase in moisture but the long term forecast will be a work in progress.

7/19+20: A WETTER WESTERN SURGE.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/19+20: The high is slowly pushing to the southwest out of the 4 Corners with the northwest flow pushing moisture down the northern edge and into western CO. This is feeding a surge in moisture that will mean more prevalent thundershowers into the weekend. Plan on slower moving, less electric systems but any windows of sun will likely be followed by more aggressive cells. Drier air starts to move in as the weekend progresses but keep the rain gear handy through Sunday. By Monday we will see more sun in the mix with drier starts through the beginning of the week but afternoon thundershowers remain in the picture so stay prepared.

Temperatures: Lows through the weekend will be milder with insulating cloud cover with CB in the 40s and Gunni in the 50s. Highs will be cooler with CB in the mid 70s and Gunni hovering right around 80.

07/18/2024

7/18: MORE OF THE SAME
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/18: The high has dropped to the south and west putting us in the northern periphery of the rotation. Drier air yesterday slowed the thundershower development but satellite imagery shows better moisture working its way in our direction this morning. This just means a slight increase in the potential for more of these scattered thundershowers so look for just a little more of the same and get out early.

Temperatures: Lows dropped to 39 for CB and 52 for Gunni. Highs will reach 82 for Gunni and 75 for CB. Lows tonight may be slightly milder if the clouds hang on.

Outlook: Models are mixed on how much moisture specifically finds our area with this rotation of the low sending a hard to predict mix in our direction. We may see an increase through Friday into the weekend but this depends on how the high wobbles through the next 36 hours. Bottom line is expect continued afternoon thundershowers with when it happens the lasting variable.

Good morning Highway 135 travelers! It’s that time of year again. Two big cattle drives heading your way. This Sunday, July 21, 2024 we will be heading north from our place at mile marker 23 to right around the Riverland entrance with a couple hundred mommas and babies….and a few bulls thrown in to grab your attention. Look for us starting about 1 pm hoping to be outta your way by 3 pm. Our crew will do their best to give you guys a lane to drive through, but keep in mind that lane doesn’t mean you need to zip through like you’re Andretti. The NEXT DAY, Monday, July 22, 2024 we will be taking them up the Brush Creek road from about 7 am to 10 am. We will start just past Skyland and go to Trampe’s private gate with a brief stop, so the cows and calves can pair back up, at the Canal trail parking lot. This road is narrow, and we use most of it, so plan on following behind if you need to go that way. As always, be safe, slow down, and enjoy the ride!

7/16: SLOWLY INCREASING MOISTURE.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 7/16: The trend remains the same today with a slight uptick in available moisture which may give the isolated thundershowers an earlier start with the same gusting outflow winds and localized rains. These remain very scattered and hit or miss but definitely be conscious of conditions if you are headed for the higher terrain.

Temperatures: Lows held to 43 for CB and 46 for Gunni. Highs will pop to 83 for Gunni and 78 for CB. Lows tonight will look about the same.

Outlook: The center of this stubborn high moves south and then slowly moves to the west through the middle of the week. This will bring changes in the concentration and timing of moisture but afternoon showers remain a threat all week and into the weekend. Don’t be fooled by sunny starts and plan accordingly for adventures to the higher terrain. Showers with very localized and hit or miss but also capable of high gusting winds, small hail and lightning.
