1/16: ANOTHER ONE JUST LIKE…
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 1/16: We saw a little wind prompting some mixing and gained a degree or 3 last night still dropping well below 0 but this does indicate a slightly milder air mass for today. This is advertised as the warmest day of the forecast but highs will only be breaking into the low teens with more clear skies and plenty of sun so don’t forget the sunscreen.

Temperatures: Overnight lows held to -18 for Gunni and -12 for CB. Highs will top out in the low teens. Lows tonight will look about the same.

Outlook: The change in the pattern we see headed into the weekend will be a mixed bag with a little snow but also a reinforcing shot of cold air. This artic shot out of the northwest will start with snow and colder air building in Friday night with early Saturday the best snow tapering through the afternoon. High winds will blow this wave out which will help with mixing but it also tees up another colder airmass. We will see a slow trickle of snow showers but also an arctic dip that will dominate the start of the new week.

1/15: IN THE COLD POOL.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 1/15: We are looking at a redo of yesterday with the cold clear night offering up another super cold low this morning. We are seeing big temperature swings but gaining 30+ degrees from -27 still keeps us in the single digits. Head up to the ridges or resort for warmer conditions and be prepared for another cold day down low.

Temperatures: Lows dropped to -27 for Gunni and -21 for CB. Highs will hold to the single digits with Gunni toiling around 5 degrees. Lows tonight will look about the same.

Outlook: Models have other areas starting to warm for a quick pop ahead of an artic blast into the weekend but without any wind we will see little real change thanks to the trapped cold air. Plan on lots of layers and watch for frostbite. By Friday night we see moisture move in from the northwest that will offer the best snow Saturday morning with tapering into the afternoon. This will be a couple inches at best but also winds to scour the cold pools but artic air into Sunday will bring a reinforcing shot. Monday and Tuesday could bring the coldest temps so far.

Here is a crown of an avalanche that ran last weekend in Hunter Creek. You'll notice this avalanche released below multiple layers of snow and ran on an old, persistent, weak layer buried deeply in the snowpack. The current persistent slab avalanche problem is complex and difficult to predict. Instead of attempting to outsmart the problem, focus on managing it through your terrain choices. Opt for simpler terrain where you are confident in managing uncertainties rather than more complex terrain with trigger points, convex rollers, and overlapping avalanche paths.

1/14: COLD INVERTED VALLEYS
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 1/14: The classic valley inversion is in full effect and another super cold clear night will reinforce that for today. Expect daytime highs struggling to break 10 with some scattered clouds mixing with mostly sunny skies but no real wind. Have layers and watch for frostbite.

Temperatures: Lows dropped to -19 for CB and hit -26 this morning for Gunni. Highs will rebound but will hold below 10 valley wide. Lows tonight will look about the same with no real changes.

Outlook: We are sitting on the eastern edge of this northern flow with models predicting a slow warm up but with nothing to really challenge this inversion. A dirty mix of sun and scattered clouds will hold through Friday with another trough bringing snow in Friday night but also a reinforcing shot of colder air. This will mostly just bring everyone else down to our temperatures but may also hamper snow production with a couple inches a day possible through Sunday.

1/13: KICKING OFF A STRING OF COLD DAYS.
TV10 Crested Butte and Gunnison Valley Daily Weather Update- For 1/13: A cold clear night has served up super cold lows and we are looking at classic valley inversion conditions. Temperatures will be on a slow rebound through the morning with sunshine helping but highs will be stuck in the low teens. Have plenty of layers for today and watch for frostbite on any exposed skin.

Temperatures: Overnight lows dropped to -20 valley wide. Highs will hold to the low teens remaining below 10 for a lot of the day. Lows tonight will look the same.

Outlook: The trough folding over itself on the west coast keeps us in high pressure and a northern flow through early Wednesday. A big high moves out of the pacific and will help turn the pattern but clear skies and colder conditions will hold. This shuffle in the pattern will help temperatures slowly rebound but continued clear skies after multiple cold days will have the cold pool pretty well anchored with no big changes until Friday night.
