Credited with the creation of the R&B-hip hop fusion genre new jack swing. Teddy Riley is the founder and lead singer of the musical group Blackstreet, as well as its predecessor, Guy. The genre also gained popularity from artists who heavily utilized Riley's production and songwriting, namely Michael Jackson, Bobby Brown, Heavy D & the Boyz, Keith Sweat, Hi-Five and many more.
Guy - four of the album's singles became significant Billboard R&B chart hits: "Groove Me" ( #4), "Teddy's Jam" ( #5), "I Like" ( #2), and "Spend the Night" ( #15) helped propel the album to double platinum status.In addition, "'Round and 'Round (Merry Go 'Round of Love)" reached #24 on the R&B chart, and "Piece of My Love" also received some airplay on R&B stations. Guy reached #1 on the Billboard R&B album chart and, more impressively, climbed to #27 on the Billboard 200 album chart without a major pop hit.
Guy released its second album, The Future. Although still not scoring Top 40 pop hits, the album's five singles became R&B hits: "Wanna Get Wit U" ( #4) "Let's Chill" ( #3) "Do Me Right," featuring Heavy D) ( #2) "D-O-G Me Out" ( #8) and "Let's Stay Together" ( #16) took the album to platinum status.
Teddy worked with Michael Jackson on his album "Dangerous" scoring couple of number #1 r&b/pop hits and top #10 hits songs like "In the Closet" "Jam" "Remember the Time".

Guy disbanded in 1992, and Riley moved on to the production, performance and promotion of Wreckx-N-Effect's second album Hard or Smooth. Based in Virginia by this time, Riley discovered and signed production duo, The Neptunes,composed of Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, during the making of Wreckx-N-Effect's smash hit single "Rump Shaker".
With over 1000 credits to his name,the musical icon has been inducted into the Hip-hop hall of fame and was recently awarded the Soul Train Legend award for his works in creating The New Jack Swing Era of music whose impact changed the sound of R&B indelibly.
In late 1991, Riley formed a second group, Blackstreet. The group would go on to release several major hits, including "Don't Leave Me" (1997), the number one single "No Diggity" (1996, featuring Dr. Dre and Queen Pen), and "Girlfriend/Boyfriend" (1999, with Janet Jackson, Eve, and Ja Rule).
