After over 11 years of working with countless artists, running battle of the bands and being deeply connected to the music community of the area, we have decided to close our doors for good.

The pandemic played a role in this, as well as Chris M, Chris O and Greg moving on to other endeavors.

Special thanks to our staff, Meeko and Billy. They have been such a big part of studio life at AFA, and are confident that they’ll be successful in their careers.

We are eternally grateful for all of the artists that came through our doors, from our original tiny basement studio to our totally-unassuming-on-the-outside shed space. We will never forget all the great times we had with all of you. Thank you all.

From the inception of the Transatlantic Slave Trade through American segregation, five centuries of unequal treatment has led people of all races to chant Black Lives Matter throughout streets across the globe. Even after over a half century following the Civil Rights Movement, society has yet to iron out the folds of racism that keep us divided. As human beings we must end our ignorance and denial, challenge our biases, and confront the uncomfortable truths that systemic disenfranchisement, mass incarceration, economic oppression, and murder at the hands of those meant to protect us are not fabrications of anyone's imagination.

There are roadblocks that people of color face that pose detriment to the pursuit of happiness for many ambitious and talented black people in this country. In the U.S., people of color have been severely underrepresented in the arts and the time has come for that to change. Whether in the music and recording industry or the visual arts world, black artists are consistently held back by unequal access to performance opportunities or find themselves pigeonholed; fates often determined by lifelong circumstances beyond one's control. There is much more to be said and so much more to be done before injustice is ameliorated on a fundamental level.

However, the gears are turning, the tides are shifting, and people are waking up. Waking up to the fact that we need to do more than just listen and learn. We need to become actively engaged in a movement that will improve the lives of those who have been deprived of a significant voice in this country. There is a very long road ahead, but we can move forward together.
To even take a small step forward, consider donating to some (or many) causes that are making a concerted effort to make our world a safer and more equitable place for Black Americans. Join a compassionate group of people that share the same vision. Band together to show that unequivocally that black lives do and always have mattered.

A small list of organizations to get behind:
https://www.joincampaignzero.org/ (working to reform the police force and provide better training to officers)
https://blacklivesmatter.com/
https://www.naacp.org/
https://www.communityjusticeexchange.org/nbfn-directory
https://www.trainingreform.org/
https://www.showingupforracialjustice.org/donate.html
and many more. Do your research. Be a part of the solution.

Follow to hear the final production! [Geeky detailed description below]

So I had a lead vocal with double. Autotuned and Vocaligned.

1.)Duplicate a vocal track (lead or double, it doesn't matter)
2.)Turn that duplicate into a harmony or counterpoint melody (I use Melodyne). It's going to sound very robotic once you play it back with the lead, like a vocoder, which may not be what you're going for.
3.)Put reverb and/or delay on the duplicate track's bus/buses
4.)Set the bus/buses to PREfader
5.)Mute the track

Now you're only sending the "fake" harmony to your effects, thereby adding texture in a more subtle manner.

A simpler, similar, and more subtle route is to use this method and just octave up/down a duplicated vocal. This is effective on instrumental tracks as well. Still adds harmonic and frequency based content without intruding on the main track.

Sounds even better in stereo! Manual automation of volume, panning, and plugin parameters makes a huge difference in so many aspects of a mix.

Follow .____ to find the finished product.

.____ harmonies and effects are fun! I set four instances of Filter Freak 2 on the bus for the Ooohhh's, set to different note durations on rhythmic mode, then bypassed them in sequence. Also, I never use a separate deesser plugin when Fabfilter ProQ3 has dynamic EQ options for each band. Just set a high shelf, change to dynamic, then set the threshold. Super clean.
