South Texas Catholic

South Texas Catholic The South Texas Catholic is the official publication for the Diocese of Corpus Christi.

In the Diocese of Corpus Christi's evangelization efforts we serve as a medium for the bishop’s messages; a venue to report activities of parishes, institutions and organizations; a way of keeping the faithful abreast of national and international issues facing the church; and a vehicle to promote the work of diocesan departments, programs and services.

Bishop Mulvey celebrated Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church in Corpus Christi on the 70th anniversary of the dedication of the church building. In his homily, he emphasized - referring to the reading of St. Paul's letter to the Corinthians - that we are all one body in Christ. "We come from different parts of the world, but God does not see differences - He sees one body, Jesus Christ," said the bishop. No one is insignificant in a parish, the bishop continued, and everyone is called to bring Christ's presence wherever they are, "bringing hope to the people."

Congratulations to Msgr. Roger Smith – he celebrates his 75th birthday today. He is the pastor of St. Patrick’s, his first home parish, where he attended school from 1st to 8th grade.
“In 1962, St. Pius X. was built, and the parish was split – our home was closer to St. Pius.” However, he remembers going to St. Patrick’s every Sunday to Mass, first in the building that is now the left wing of the school. He celebrated his First Communion in the new church of St. Patrick, and it was there that he began thinking about a possible vocation to the priesthood in 7th grade.
“We had a High School Seminary in Corpus Christi; that’s where I went after St. Patick’s School,” he continues. His path led him to St. Mary’s Seminary in Houston, and his first assignment after his ordination in 1976 was at Corpus Christi Cathedral. After being a dean for the High School Seminary, 6 years at St. Joseph’s in Allice and 8 years at St. Gertrude the Great in Kingsville, the circle came to a close in January 2000 – he became pastor at St. Patrick’s, very happy to “go back to my roots.” Besides celebrating his 75th birthday this year, he is also the Pastor at St. Patrick’s for 25 years – a double reason to celebrate!

This Sunday is The Fest of the Epiphany of the Lord: "They saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh" (Mt 2:10-11).
Matthew is the only Evangelist who mentions the three Magi. But what are we actually celebrating on Epiphany?
