One of the first things Quinn Waitley and her family purchased after moving from East County to Coronado in 2009 was a foam surfboard from Costco.
Waitley’s dad, David, screwed metal handles onto the top of the board to make catching waves accessible for his daughter, who was diagnosed with spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy at birth.
Little did Waitley know, she was honing her skills as an adaptive surfer before even knowing what the sport was, before para surfing was even officially created.

The USS George Washington pulled into Naval Air Station North Island on July 10 to start performing a hull swap with the USS
Ronald Reagan that had been stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, since 2015.
The USS Ronald Reagan is the Navy’s only forward-deployed aircraft carrier, meaning that it is permanently stationed in a different country or region of the world, in this case, Japan.
The USS George Washington will replace it as the only forward-deployed aircraft carrier.
The Coronado News had the chance to tour the USS George Washington, so come aboard with us!

Coronado’s Mayor Richard Bailey has summited Mount Everest.
It’s been a goal of his since he was 12, and 25 years later, has finally reached that goal.
He was sick, not being able to keep food down with a stomach bug and coughing from a lung infection — but he pushed on.
29,032 feet later, he became the tallest man in the world.

On this day of love, we have the most heartwarming story for you all. Meet Shane and Dante. Dante has cerebral palsy and is nonverbal and Shane has known him for 19 years, since he was five. Shane started walking Dante around Coronado when Dante moved to the Skilled Nursing Facility on the island.
“He’s my favorite person,” Shane says.
Every night they walk around for a couple hours together, feeding ducks, listening to music and enjoying each other’s company.
It’s a beautiful story of friendship and love that traverses the spoken language.

For our one year anniversary, we thought it would be fitting to reintroduce the team to you all: a lot of the same people, and some new faces.
Thank you for giving us a chance to tell all of Coronado’s stories.
Here’s to many more years. 🎉
Need to know where to eat this week? Look no further because we’ve got the sandwich shop for you.
We’re starting a new series on our social media of where to grab a bite during the week and we’re starting it off nice and simple with a good ole sammich. Can’t go wrong with that.
Which Wich boasts an incredible menu but owner and manager Dharmesh Patel says the Turkey Club and the Italian Grinder are the two most popular orders; the Grinder boasting the fan favorite all across the country, Patel says.
It’s what’s being filmed in this video too ;) so if you like what you see, go ahead and step in to 926 Orange Ave because Patel just wants to brighten your day with a solid sandwich.
“You don’t want to add to their problems, you want to take away their problems. Give them a break in the day and really enjoy the moment to have what they want. A custom sandwich,” Patel says.
So yes, there’s a menu. But go ahead and order whatever your hungry heart desires. Enjoy Which Wich!
Thank you to Editor & Publisher and Bob Sillick for the kind article. And, we love the headline: “A new voice for quality journalism in Southern California.” And this is what we said about the Coronado Eagle & Journal and Coronado Times: They do a fantastic job, but the more eyes on City of Coronado and Coronado Unified School District, the better.
