Things are coming full circle for Jessamine Cantey.
She remembers when she was little, and her father’s factory had just opened, going to a carnival in the factory’s warehouse. And, she remembers how special that day was for the families working at GlobalTech Industries.
Now, after joining the business in January as the director of marketing and communications, she’s planning the business’ 30th anniversary family fun day.
After more than a century of trying, Georgia may soon get its first national park, as the state’s congressional delegation puts aside partisan differences to upgrade the status of ancient mounds in Macon.
The Muscogee Nation, whose ancestors were forcibly moved to Oklahoma by the U.S. government in 1836, has collaborated on national park status, and would have a role in guiding its management.
People packed into Raider Stadium like sardines on Friday night for the school year’s grand finale, the graduation of the Class of 2025.
This year was full of firsts for the student body. It was Principal Dr. Adam Bagwell’s first time at the graduation ceremony’s helm, and it was the first time in student body history that a pair of twins earned the title of valedictorian and salutatorian.
But like any graduation ceremony, it was also full of finality.
By the middle of the next decade, Georgians may be able to travel between Atlanta and Savannah by high-speed rail, avoiding traffic and expensive air fares.
The state Department of Transportation has launched a study of the feasibility of connecting the two urban centers with an intercity passenger rail line. The agency held the first "stakeholder" meeting online in January to begin gathering public feedback on the project, with more planned later this year.
If that first session is any indication, Georgians are enticed by the idea, said Clement Solomon, director of the DOT's Intermodal Division. The meeting drew more than 4,000 public comments, Solomon said.

The Habersham County Board of Education held its second public hearing on Monday for its Fiscal Year 2026 budget.
No one from the community spoke this time around, but Chief Financial Officer Staci Newsome was able to provide more concrete numbers for residents and board members in attendance.

A sharply divided Georgia Senate passed a comprehensive tort reform bill Friday that is Republican Gov. Brian Kemp’s top priority for the 2025 General Assembly session.
The amendment would strike a balance between the interests of business owners bombarded with skyrocketing insurance premiums and the constitutional rights of injured Georgians seeking compensation, said Sen. Bo Hatchett, R-Cornelia, a plaintiff lawyer by trade and the amendment’s sponsor.

The Northeast Georgian is one of Habersham County's oldest and most respected business establishments. The Georgian began publishing in 1892 and in 1990 merged with Tri-County Advertiser.
The newspaper is dedicated to serving the people of Habersham County. It is the only publication both in print and online that is solely dedicated to chronicling the lives of Habersham County and its residents.
With a total circulation exceeding 10,000, the newspaper publishes two print editions each week. One issue is published on Wednesdays, and the second is delivered on Fridays.
In addition, the newspaper publishes this online edition which is updated on the same days that its printed product is delivered. When news events dictate, this Web site is updated with breaking news before it is published in the newspaper.
Located at 2440 Old Athens Highway in Cornelia this office houses the newspaper's editorial, advertising, composing and administrative staff, and the building also serves as the home of Georgia Mountain Press which prints The Northeast Georgian as well as community newspapers in surrounding counties. Alan NeSmith serves as the regional publisher of The Northeast Georgian.
The newspaper has more than 45 full- and part-time employees. Our goal is outlined in the mission statement that runs in each issue of our newspaper. It reads:
