Columbia Heights City Council Member KT Jacobs’ press conference about lawsuit against the city of Columbia Heights regarding recall election.
Columbia Heights Council Member KT Jacobs and her attorney, Gregory Joseph, held a press conference today, Thursday morning, Sept. 21, to discuss a lawsuit that has been filed against the city of Columbia Heights over the matter of her recall election, which is currently scheduled for Feb. 14, 2024.
Council Member KT Jacobs was joined by her husband, Jake Jacobs, at the press conference.
The Columbia Heights City Council passed two motions, 4-1, at its July 24 meeting to accept a petition calling for a Special Election to recall City Council Member KT Jacobs and to set the Special Election for Feb. 13, 2024. Jacobs voted against both motions.
On May 30, a petition for the recall of Jacobs was submitted.
The petition was started by Columbia Heights citizens, organized into a group called Concerned Citizens of Columbia Heights, following an independent investigation by Red Cedar Consulting, which found Jacobs liable for making a racist phone call to then-candidate Justice Spriggs and lying about her involvement.
The investigation states Jacobs, while allegedly using a fake name, questioned the racial identity of Spriggs during the July 2022 phone call.
Spriggs was elected to the council in November 2022, and took his seat at the start of 2023.
Jacobs has refused many times she was involved with the alleged phone call, and has declined to resign several times.
