Hey all, given the forecasted dangerous cold, we will be opening the warming shelter at United Church of Cookeville at 502 Gould Drive.

Here are our plans: We will open tomorrow, Thursday, February 13, at 4pm and remain open until 1:00 Friday. That will take care of the cold snap overnight.

We will reopen on Sunday, February 16, at 4pm and remain open until the dangerous temperatures are over.

This is a warming shelter, so if you are without heat or shelter for whatever reason, we hope you will let us serve you.

We are a coalition of organizations that includes Helping Hands of Putnam County, Recovery Kitchen, Hip Cookeville, and Cookeville Human Fund. We rely entirely on community love and support to keep the shelter comfortable and safe for our guests and volunteers.

A few supplies we know we will need for this cold snap include:
27 Gallon black totes with a yellow lid (at least 20 more)
Coffee and powdered creamer
Plastic Utensils
Soda in 2-liter bottles
We will put out a list of food items but breakfast foods for sure.
Monetary donations to buy supplies and help offset the enormous water and electric bill the church incurred during the last shelter.
Prayers and love.

Thank you for being a loving and caring community.

Heavy rain moves into the area this weekend, bringing an additional 3 to 5 inches of rain across Middle TN. This rain falling on already saturated soils will result in a medium to high chance for flooding Friday night and into Sunday morning. Be sure to stay weather aware this weekend and have multiple ways to receive warnings!

‼️ 3:30PM UPDATE: CONFIRMED TORNADO FROM FEB 6TH, 2025: The Nashville National Weather Service has surveyed damage in northern Putnam and Overton counties and has confirmed an EF-1 tornado. This happened February 6th, last night, at 6:20 PM. It was on the ground for 14 minutes and winds peaked at 95 mph.

2/7/25 Update:

We are happy to report that no injuries were reported during last nights storm as it passed through our county.

All main roads and most side roads in northern Putnam have been cleared and passable but many remain without power. Upper Cumberland Electric is out in full force to restore the power as quickly and safely as possible. Many poles were either destroyed or damaged, so they are having to replace them, this is taking longer so we ask you have patience as they work and stay out of the affected areas.

Our neighboring counties and some counties to the east got hit hard and have extensive damage, we ask you keep them in your thoughts as well.

We shared a post from the Putnam County Emergency Management Agency regarding a damage survey; please, if you or someone you know sustained damage, we encourage you to fill it out and include photos.

While we wait to hear from the National Weather Service on if it was a confirmed tornado, we would like to remind everyone how quickly the weather can change as we saw last night. It is vital to have multiple ways to receive warnings during an inclement weather event.
