🚨 **Storm Alert for South Carolina!** 🚨

Dear friends and neighbors,

A storm is expected to hit the South Carolina coast soon, bringing heavy rain and potential flooding. Your safety is our top priority, so here are some essential tips to help you prepare:

1. **Stay Informed**:
- Monitor local weather updates through TV, radio, and reliable online sources. Ed Piotrowski WPDE, Alex Cordero
- Sign up for emergency alerts in your area to receive timely notifications.

2. **Prepare an Emergency Kit**:
- Include enough water (1 gallon per person per day) and non-perishable food for at least 3 days.
- Pack medications, first-aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, a multi-tool, and important documents in waterproof containers.
- Don’t forget personal hygiene items, blankets, and a weather radio.

3. **Secure Your Home**:
- Clear gutters and drains to prevent water buildup.
- Secure outdoor furniture, decorations, and garbage cans to prevent them from becoming projectiles.
- Check your sump pump and have a backup battery system if possible.

4. **Evacuation Plan**:
- Know your evacuation routes and have a plan for where you will stay.
- Keep your gas tank full in case you would like to leave the area.
- Make sure all family members know the plan and have a designated meeting spot.

5. **Pet Safety**:
- Ensure you have enough food, water, and medications for your pets.
- Keep pets indoors and dry, and have carriers or leashes ready.
- Make sure your pet’s identification is up to date, including tags and microchip information.

6. **Gas Up Your Cars**:

- Keep portable chargers and power banks fully charged to ensure your phone stays powered for updates and communication.

8. **Generator Safety**:
- If you have a home generator, ensure it’s in good working order.
- Always use generators outdoors in well-ventilated areas to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
- Never operate a generator inside a garage or close to windows and doors.

9. **Safety if the Power Goes Out**:
- Have flashlights and extra batteries handy. Avoid using candles to reduce the risk of fire.
- Unplug appliances and electronics to prevent damage from power surges when electricity is restored.
- Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed to maintain the cold temperature. A refrigerator will keep food cold for about 4 hours if unopened, and a full freezer will keep its temperature for about 48 hours. Freeze a container of water and add a coin to the top of the frozen water to know if you lost power. The coin will be at the bottom of the container if you lost power.

- Use coolers with ice packs to keep perishable food items cold if the outage is prolonged.
- Be cautious when using portable stoves or grills indoors, as they can produce dangerous fumes.

10. **Communicate**:
- Keep in touch with family and friends to let them know your plans and that you’re safe.
- Establish a family communication plan in case you get separated.

This is a great safety guide for children swimming in lakes and swimming pools. The color of the bathing suit can make it easier or more difficult to see children while they are swimming. This is a good reminder to always have adult supervision when children are swimming.
