Individual training sessions have started outside of the weaning pen. While we work with each puppy every day, we will just post photos of one puppy doing the exercise each day.
This is orange collar male away from his littermates who grasps the concept of sitting for attention and making eye contact quite easily. The puppies are in their critical socialization period and want to connect with humans. We teach them to sit and make eye contact rather than to jump and whine for attention.
Coco loves helping with this part of puppy training and had kisses for her puppy at the end of the exercise.( She is really hoping that she will be able to do a little retrieving with her puppies before they go home but knows this is the first step).

We are 4 weeks and 2 days old today! We are being introduced to our first curriculum item which has lights and sounds and we are very confident exploring this item. We will start on individual training sessions today where we begin to learn to sit and make eye contact for attention. We will soon be adding a second potty box to our weaning pen as we are getting bigger and don’t like to share it as much anymore!

Thanks to Java’s family ( Brownie & Cobalt’s January 2020) for the lovely Christmas card!

Cocos box of chocolates are back in the weaning pen for a snack and a nap. Yellow collar is now wearing a lime collar because she outgrew her collar.

Coco’s box of chocolates has their first novel experience as a group outside of the weaning pen at 4 weeks and 1 day old inside the house because it is too cold to go outside today. We have their familiar toys in this unfamiliar area. They were definitely in an exploratory mood and ventured onto a new surface ( the slippery floor) without pause. They have always been on a surface with traction before but we want them to experience a different surface before they go home so it won’t be scary for them. Tomorrow, we will work on getting some individual sessions in with each chocolate outside the weaning pen.

Our chocolates are 4 weeks and 1 day old today. We are working on a new curriculum item which we only do under strict supervision ( eyes on the puppies at all times and removal from the weaning pen as soon as the exercise is over). These small objects crinkle and are small enough for the puppies to carry in their mouths. We are also working on the puppy call and will take an indoor field trip to somewhere else in the house ( it’s too cold to go outside today).

Our chocolates are awake from their nap and hanging out in the weaning pen with Coco.

We are 4 weeks old today! We had a busy day having our individual photos taken and our nails trimmed. We are working on a few new curriculum items. One is a new surface and the others are items we can pick up and carry in our mouths( with supervision only). When we make that whining sound, it’s time for a nap!

Coco’s box of chocolates are 3 weeks and 6 days old today. They are up to 1/4 cup of puppy mush 3 times a day and Coco supplements them with nursing every 4 hours. Coco is such a good mom because they have teeth on the top and bottom now!

12/21/2024

We are 3 weeks and 6 days old today! We are getting better at coming when called. We love when our humans come over to our pen. We are enjoying our crinkle toys, especially the ones which are scented with peanut butter. We are carrying our toys in our mouths like real retrievers. We are using our potty box consistently. We are still nursing every 4 hours ( and are happy that Coco lets us with all the teeth we have now!). We eat puppy mush 3 times a day but not enough to totally wean yet.

Part of our care routine includes common household noise exposures at age appropriate times. We remove the chocolates from the weaning pen and completely disinfect the area and wash all the linens daily. At this age, we provide a completely new potty box daily. We do spot clean ups as needed in between complete cleanings. One of the first noises that the chocolates are exposed to is the shop vac. As you can see, they aren’t stressed by this sound and some are trying to climb out of their holding box to explore.

We are 3 weeks and 6 days old today!

Order is restored when Coco comes in to feed us!
Cocos box of chocolates are 3 weeks and 5 days old today!

The chocolates are enjoying their crinkle toys especially the ones which are scented with peanut butter. They are engaging in normal play and are becoming more like little dogs each day. Like true Labradors, they are already enjoying carrying their toys in their mouth.

Cocos box of chocolates are 3 weeks and 5 days old today!

Laurie and Joe’s Labs

We are Laurie and Joe Zalewski, breeders of Labrador Retrievers and proud owners of Bailey, Brownie, Midnight, Shiloh, Maddie, Sitka, and Cobalt.

Our goal is to provide our puppy families with the puppy they need and want through detailed puppy evaluations.

We differ from many other breeders as we raise our puppies on an unique curriculum based on the sensitive developmental stages of a puppy . When our puppies leave Laurie & Joe’s Labs, they know the world is safe, people are kind, and dogs are friendly.

We believe in the power of a dog and the ability they have to change our puppy families lives as companion pets, service dogs, emotional support animals, facility dogs, school dogs, and sporting partners,
