Red collar male enjoyed his 5 minute wagon ride outside. He is the daredevil of the group and I could see the wheels turning in his head as he was trying to figure out a way to jump out and go play in the puppy yard ( don’t worry- it didn’t happen).

Green collar female enjoyed her 5 minute wagon ride outside up the walk into the driveway. She was confidently taking everything in.

Orange collar male( we have new collars now so it’s easier to tell the chocolates apart) enjoyed his 5 minute wagon ride outside taking in all the new sights.

01/13/2025

Lime( formerly yellow collar female) enjoyed her 5 minute wagon ride too! Remember, all 4 off the floor in places off your property until your puppy is fully vaccinated.

We began our outdoor passive socialization today by taking the chocolates individually for a 5 minute wagon ride up the walk and into the driveway. We recommend that our families use such a wagon when taking the chocolates to locations off their property until fully vaccinated. Blue collar female enjoyed her wagon ride!

The chocolates are on night 9 of closed door crate conditioning and everyone is tucked in with their snuggle buddy in their individual crates.

After a nap, the chocolates practiced some loose leash walking in different parts of our indoor property. Here is red collar male ignoring the shoes and following the treats. The goal is for the chocolates to get the feel of walking with a leash attached to their collars.

We are 7 weeks old today! We will have our nails trimmed and our individual photos taken and posted. Our new exposure item today is a scale like the chocolates will use at the vet’s office. It is a surface which we want the chocolates to become accustomed as it is unlike any that they will usually encounter. Chocolate families- please reach out with any questions about ways in which to make the first vet visit a success. There are also some good tips in the Puppy Culture booklet I mailed to you several weeks ago called How to Advocate for Your Puppy.

The chocolates are on night 8 of their nighttime closed door crate conditioning and are doing well. All in their individual crates with their snuggle buddies. The noise in the background is our portable air purifier which acts as a white noise machine for the chocolates and I think it helps lull them to sleep.

Blue collar female is doing well with her loose leash walking individually. She is confident and doesn’t need the food bait to motivate her today!

We are 6 weeks and 6 days old today! Our curriculum item is a toy stuffed with frozen cheese( see earlier photo). This makes for a great crate game activity. We did well overnight with our closed door crate conditioning. And, our individual training today will be loose leash walking individually( just getting the feel of the leash attached to our collar- see separate video).

For our chocolate families:
These are the items that we are using in the next video. The toy can be found under favorites on our website. The spray cheese can be found in any store. We freeze this toy( with the cheese inside) before giving it to the chocolates so they have to work hard to get the cheese out and don’t get it in large quantities which could cause stomach upset at this age.

Night 7 of closed door crate conditioning and all the chocolates are doing well

She has the beginnings of loose leash walking down and has perfected the sit at the end

01/10/2025

We are 6 weeks and 5 days old today! We have lots of energy but it is too cold for us to go outside today. We have some outside adventures planned for next week. In the meantime, we are exploring another surface, elevated and padded steps. The puppies are showing no hesitation with this new item. We are also working on individual loose leash walking ( see separate video) and on closed door crate conditioning at night time only- we only needed to get up once during the night for a potty break.

01/10/2025

We are on night 6 of our closed door crate conditioning and are doing great! We are fast asleep after returning from a potty break. We are getting the hang of it!

01/09/2025

We have begun loose leash walking. The goal is not to walk perfectly but to have the chocolates get the feel of wearing a leash attached to their collars and be comfortable with that feeling. This is the first time for all the chocolates and no one pulled or jumped. We were in a different area of the house. The wind was kicking up and this chocolate was unfazed. The chocolates spend time individually outside of the weaning pen with us in different areas of the house so they experience living in a home before they go to their new homes.

Laurie and Joe’s Labs

We are Laurie and Joe Zalewski, breeders of Labrador Retrievers and proud owners of Bailey, Brownie, Midnight, Shiloh, Maddie, Sitka, and Cobalt.

Our goal is to provide our puppy families with the puppy they need and want through detailed puppy evaluations.

We differ from many other breeders as we raise our puppies on an unique curriculum based on the sensitive developmental stages of a puppy . When our puppies leave Laurie & Joe’s Labs, they know the world is safe, people are kind, and dogs are friendly.

We believe in the power of a dog and the ability they have to change our puppy families lives as companion pets, service dogs, emotional support animals, facility dogs, school dogs, and sporting partners,
