Day 2 of our EDC series: PFAS! These ones are a doozy because they're quite literally almost everywhere, and they are impossible to avoid, but we can take steps to minimize them!

Some of the biggest things you can do to minimize your exposure are:

1) switch your nonstick cookware to cast iron, stainless steel, or ceramic (NOT ceramic-coated). Even if the nonstick pans stay PFAS / PFOA-free. If you can't part with your pots and pans just yet, try not to cook on high heat, and use silicone utensils, that way the coating stays intact as much as possible and does not leach into your food!

2) Get a good water filter - I got a pitcher for Christmas, and can already tell a huge difference, even just in taste, compared to my old Brita!

3) Use your own metal or glass food containers

4) Avoid products, including cosmetics, varnishes, and household items, that have PTFE or “perfluor” in the ingredient list.

It's easy to feel overwhelmed when thinking about how pervasive these chemicals are in our homes and our environment. However, if and when you can, try to make some of these simple swaps to limit exposures!

PHTHALATES (Is it just me, or does even the name look confusing?)

Phthalates (pronounced "thal-ates") are chemical compounds developed in the last century that are used to make plastics more durable. These colorless, odorless, oily liquids are also referred to as “plasticizers”. Phthalates also function as solvents and stabilizers in perfumes and other fragrance preparations. Cosmetics that may contain phthalates include but are not limited to, nail polishes, hair sprays, aftershave lotions, cleansers, and shampoos.

Phthalates have been found to have noticeable, detrimental effects on multiple organ systems and human development, so avoiding them when possible is ideal. Personally, I try to avoid as many personal care, cleaning, and laundry products that have any kind of fragrance listed on the label. Instead, I opt for fragrance-free options or those scented with essential oils only.

In addition to looking out for "fragrance" on ingredient labels, phthalates can also be used under the names dibutylphthalate (DBP), used as a plasticizer in products such as nail polishes (to reduce cracking by making them less brittle); dimethylphthalate (DMP), used in hair sprays (to help avoid stiffness by allowing them to form a flexible film on the hair); and diethylphthalate (DEP), so keep an eye out for those as well if you are trying to avoid phthalates!

Over the past year, I have noticed that the wellness industry has really started talking about the effects that common hormone disruptors can have on our bodies. Over the next few days, I'll be doing a more detailed breakdown of each of these different chemicals, what they do, how to avoid them, and healthy swaps to make.

But first - what even are endocrine disruptors (aka "hormone disruptors), and why should we try to limit them?

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are natural or human-made chemicals found in certain foods, household/cleaning products, makeup, skincare, and hair care products, candles, and so many other items that we use daily that may mimic, block, or interfere with the body’s hormones and endocrine system.

These chemicals are associated with a wide array of health issues, including increased risk of metabolic disorders such as diabetes and metabolic syndrome, reproductive abnormalities, early onset of puberty, changes in gene expression, and suppressed immune function. It has also been found that EDCs, particularly those affecting or mimicking estrogen, known as estrogenic endocrine disruptors (EEDs), have played a large role in the influence of various neurocognitive disorders such as Alzheimer's, Dementia, and Parkinson's.

You have probably heard people say to use BPA-free water bottles or that cooking on cast iron and stainless steel pans is healthier than using nonstick, so stay tuned... We will be diving into why this week!
