April is , and to kick off our series, we want to highlight companies focused on sustainability and giving back to the environment. Our first company is Patagonia, an American retailer of outdoor clothing, founded in 1973. Although the company is known for their global market and quality clothing, Patagonia’s noteworthy quality is their fight against the climate crisis.

Patagonia has implemented a self-tax of 1% of their profits to provide support to environmental nonprofits defending air, land, and water worldwide. They work to connect consumers with Patagonia grantees in order to tackle the climate crisis the world is facing today. They help to expose people to events, petitions, volunteer work, and other opportunities to better the environment.

In 2016, Patagonia donated 100% of sales made on Black Friday, totaling $10 million, towards environmental organizations. In 2018, Patagonia received a tax cut (part of the tax cut plan for groups committing to protect air, land and water and helping to find solutions to the climate crisis) and then donated that $10 million right back into climate change awareness. Patagonia also gives grants to organizations that help identify the root causes of environmental problems and approach issues with a commitment to long-term change. Patagonia sets a great example of how to use one’s business, voice, and community to help better the world and climate. Like they say, “Don’t give in, give back.” Learn more about their activism here: https://www.patagonia.com/activism/

As we wrap up our series for , we want to share the inspirational story of Sara Blakely. Sara Blakely is an American businesswoman and the founder of Spanx. She faced hardships and gender discrimination throughout her career, but her passion in her product was what led her to become the world’s youngest female self-made billionaire in 2012.

Sara set aside $5,000 from a previous job, her only funding to launch the company. After continuous rejections on the phone, she took a week off of work, jumped on a plane to North Carolina and started cold-calling manufacturing companies. She faced a lot of rejection, as most of the men who worked at these companies believed there was no market for them, until she got her first yes - from a plant owner who had asked his daughters about the idea.

She decided to write her own patent and learned how to do it herself from buying a book at Barnes & Noble. She says in a podcast from 2017, that she was never doing it for the money, and the most important thing was making the product and being able to stand on her own two feet as a woman.

Sara Blakely’s entrepreneurial spirit and career milestones make her an inspiration to many young female entrepreneurs around the world, showing them to not give up on their ideas and dreams.

Last week we were on set for American Nitrile, filming their people and facility and covering the ribbon cutting ceremony that marked the official opening of their factory in Grove City, Ohio. While many companies talk of putting their people first, American Nitrile prioritizes this commitment on a daily basis. This was evident in every discussion and interview, from the CEO and Founder to the hardworking employees that keep operations humming day to day.

American Nitrile is mitigating supply chain risks by reshoring manufacturing of critical PPE back to the U.S. What's more is they are revolutionizing industry sustainability standards, including implementing a state-of-the-art water reclamation process that recycles 400,000 gallons of wastewater daily. They are utilizing liquefied natural gas (LNG) to power operations. With a commitment to sustainability, resiliency, transparency, and prioritizing its people, American Nitrile is setting a high bar for domestic manufacturing. At full capacity, they will be the single largest nitrile glove manufacturer in the world.

Visit www.americannitrile.com to learn more about this forward thinking company and to find out how you can source critical PPE from a trusted partner right here in the U.S.

As we observe in our series, we celebrate female education activist, Malala Yousafzai. Malala won her first Nobel Peace Prize at just 17 years old, making her the youngest person to ever receive one. She is known for fighting for equal rights in education for women as in her homeland, Swat Valley, girls were banned from receiving an education by the Pakistani Taliban. In 2012, a gunman attempted to murder Malala for her activism and shot her in the head, to which she survived. Following her recovery, she became one of the most important female education activists in the world. She went on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize, star in the documentary, Her Name is Malala, which was shortlisted for the Oscars, and has written many bestseller books.

A quote from Malala states, “I truly believe the only way we can create global peace is through not only educating our minds, but our hearts and our souls.” We celebrate Malala for all that she has accomplished and thank her for continuing to fight for women all over the world.

As we continue to observe we honor the notorious Ruth Bader Ginsburg in our series. RBG spent her career as a Supreme Court justice, fighting for women's rights and breaking gender barriers to become the second female on the SCOTUS. It was her own experience with sexism that was the fuel that inspired her actions throughout her career. She was one of only nine women in her class at Harvard Law and she later learned that she was being paid less than her male colleagues during her time as a professor at Rutgers Law School. Ruth Bader Ginsburg was an inspiration for many, influencing the fight against sexism and discrimination in America.

She is quoted as saying, “Fight for the things you care about, but do it in a way that will lead others to join you.” She did just that. We remember her legacy today and celebrate her for opening the door for other women to come after her.

The theme for today’s is and Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a prime example, as she was a dedicated champion and advocate for equal rights for all people, including ruling in favor of protections for people with disabilities. She also fought to protect voting rights for African Americans, authoring a historic dissent to the Supreme Court’s ruling in Shelby County v. Holder, which reversed sections of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Her legacy lives on as we celebrate her life and achievements today.

As we observe we are spotlighting 20-year-old Greta Thunberg as the first in our series. This is especially fitting today as it also happens to be . Thunberg has been appealing to world leaders to reduce the earth’s carbon footprint since she was just 15 years old. She has changed her own lifestyle to reflect her convictions by going vegan, upcycling, and refusing to fly in an airplane, even when traveling great distances.

In a recent interview with Trevor Noah of The Daily Show, she explained her journey of traveling from Europe to New York City on a zero-emissions boat. She says the first thing she noticed when she arrived at the harbor was the smell. Noah explained how she was the impetus for a new term: “The Greta Effect,” which has inspired many people to opt to travel via trains to reduce their own carbon footprint. Greta continues to open the eyes of people worldwide to global warming and climate change through leading demonstrations such as School Strike for Climate and she does not intend to stop anytime soon.
