National Coming Out Day (NCOD) was first
celebrated in the United States in 1988. The day was established by Jean O'Leary, a gay rights activist, and psychologist Richard Eichberg. They chose October 11th to mark the anniversary of the 1987 March on Washington for Le***an and Gay Rights.

The day's origins are rooted in the idea that coming out to family, friends, and colleagues is the most basic form of LGBTQIA+ activism. The founders believed that homophobia is more likely to thrive in an atmosphere of ignorance and silence.

NCOD is a day to:

Celebrate the courage of those who live openly as LGBTQIA+

Raise awareness of LGBTQIA+ issues

Support anyone "coming out of the closet"

Acknowledge the challenges that LGBTQIA+ individuals face in their journey towards self-expression
