To my knowledge Marcus Olivarez is the first Columbus Alum to ever play in the Baseball College World Series. The Longhorns did not get the outcome they wanted today, but Marcus did get to go in. He pitched a scoreless 7th Inning and struck out 1. Olivarez only gave up 2 earned runs all year, had a sub 1 ERA, threw in the mid 90's and at times reaching the upper 90's.
Marcus has come a long way since I covered him @ Columbus. Olivarez has had a long road of ups and downs to get to this point. At times early in his college career he did not get enough playing time to show his skillset. Olivarez never wavered nor doubted that he belonged at this level. Instead he kept working hard, never gave up and had a great family and supporting group that believed in him. Things don't always come easy, but if you work hard and believe in yourself things typically fall in place. May not be immediately, but eventually they will. Olivarez is a testament to that. Everything in life is not easy. If you want it fight for it. What a dream come true to actually get to pitch in the College World Series and to get to do it for his favorite College, The University of Texas.
The video below is actually of Marcus's second ever college appearance when he played for the University of Lamar. I remember it vividly. It February 18, 2018. I knew with a busy schedule I wouldn't get to make very many of his games and him being a freshman had no idea if he would even get to play any that year. I knew some of Marcus family was going, so I was like what the heck. At worst I will at least get to watch some UT Baseball. We get there and it was one of the coldest baseball games I have ever been to. As you can tell no one is in the stands. Out of view is a group of about 20 people there to see Marcus all huddles together under blankets, hoodies, rain covers, etc. You name it we had it on. The 5th inning comes around and Marcus goes to warm up. I was like what are the odds the one
Lady Cards were down 7-3 going into the bottom of the 7th. Mathis started the inning at the plate and the rally started. The Lady Cards bats got hot. Tribe hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Mayson Post to tie the game at 7 with only 1 out. Mathis came back up to the plate with 2 outs and bases loaded. The at bat started 3-0, but eventually went to a full count. With bases loaded, 2 outs and a full count Mathis delivered a line drive to left center to score Morrow and Walk it Off. What a game. Mathis is at her best in high pressure situations and she delivered once again. Before last season the Lady Cards Softball Program had never been past the 3rd round. The last 2 seasons they have made it to at least the 4th Round. GO CARDINALS!!! #DTBL
2022 Area Championship Highlights
The Lady Cards won the Area Championship in dramatic fashion with Tribes Walk off RBI. However there was a big play early in the game that deserves a lot of attention. Lady Cards were only up by one. There was a runner on 3rd and only 1 out. The ball is hit to Mathis. Instead of worrying about the out @ 1st Mathis notices the runner and 3rd taking a very large lead. She proceeds to get her in a rundown which leads to an out and stops the tying run from scoring. If you notice in the video, Mia Post comes in from left field when she noticed no one was covering third and got the tag out. Kudos to Mathis for recognizing and starting the execution of the run down and Mia Post for finishing it. Great execution by all positions involved. Momentum changes in big games are key and the Lady Cards were on the right end of that momentum change. GO CARDINALS!!! #DTBL
Tuesday Columbus Alum Marcus Olivarez made his first appearance as a Texas Longhorn. Olivarez gave up 0 Hits 1 BB and 1 K in the bottom of the 9th. Olivarez struck out the last batter looking with a nice slider. GO MARCUS!!! #DTBL
Lady Cards Highlights vs. Llano 5-13-2021
The Lady Cards had an exciting 4-3 11 Inning Playoff win last week against Llano. There were many great plays during the game, but here are a few game changing highlights. Only highlights not in the video are Randermann's 23K's that night. She will need her own highlight video for that alone..
The video starts off with a great defensive play by Olivarez behind the plate. She also threw a batter out at 2nd right after that to end the inning. Next clip is a 2 Run HR with 2 outs by Post. She scores Mathis who earlier in the inning turned an 0-2 count into a walk. Next clip is a Triple by Mathis who scores Collier to put the Lady Cards up 3-1 in the bottom of the 5th Inning. The next clip 2 clips are in the top of the 7th. The first one is a sharp hit into left field. Binder plays it great an doesn't allow more than one runner to score. Between those 2 clips Randermann strikes out a batter for 2 outs. Then once again Binder is tested in left field and not only does she field it perfectly, but she throws it on target to Olivarez to get the out at home and not allow Llano to go ahead.
The last 2 clips are both in the bottom of the 11th inning. Randermann who had pitched phenomenal all night gets a big hit to start the inning off. Schindler decides to play small ball and have Post lay down a bunt to advance Randermann to second base. Post puts the ball on the ground and the rest is history. The third baseman for Llano makes a throw the first baseman cannot handle and Randermann scores from first. What a fitting end for Randermann to score the winning run after giving it her all with 23K's and 212 pitches in the circle that night.
