The Cottontown nickname came from cotton brokerages and warehouses located at the intersection of Richardson and Upper Streets, which is now Main and Elmwood. In the early 1900s, William Wallace, who owned large parcels of land north and east of the city limits, registered 16 suburban plots of land along Bull Street and sold several acres to the State of South Carolina for the State Hospital.
