Labor Day – It’s a long weekend and many of us are celebrating with a day off and a little bit of extra time spent with family and friends. Extra time with friends and family equals a great time to squeeze in one last barbecue before Fall hits and the weather changes. Thank you to everyone who came out to our 2nd Annual Hanging With Heroes event. We had a BLAST!

Children in attendance enjoyed inflatables, face painting, and activities from our table sponsors and community heroes. They also participated in a fun touch-a-truck experience thanks to Colorado Springs Utilities and the Colorado Springs Fire Department. To top it off, Paw Patrol Pups, Marshall and Chase, stopped by for an exciting meet and greet experience.

A failed first marriage, college, and later second marriage meant I had my children later. Not twenties, or early thirties. Later. I had my first at 40 and my second at 42. Not too old, I assured myself.

I never wanted to admit that having children later would be hard. Now that my littles are older and I am almost 50, I have to admit there are sometimes I wish my husband and I were younger. We have, however, found ways to cope and thrive.

Recently, my husband and I celebrated 21 years of wedded bliss. I’m usually not super nostalgic when it comes to anniversaries and birthdays. This year, though, I realized that we’ve been married kind of a long time. We are now to that point when people say, “Wow, 21 years! How have you kept your marriage together for that long?”

The first 21 years hasn’t been perfect, but it has been our version of perfect, and we wouldn’t change it – the good or the bad.

It is not unusual to find my three-year-old tiptoeing out of bed each evening, insisting she just isn’t tired. But one night, she took it to an entirely different level. She had gotten out of bed, put on her sunglasses, tiara, princess skirt and several beaded bracelets. She marched herself down to my room, barged in, and let me know very matter-of-factly, “I’m not tired.”
