Perhaps one of the hardest conversations we have with our young children is that of Santa Claus. After years of fostering the notion that he travels the world in one night with his magnificent reindeer, bringing toys and good cheer to every good girl and boy, slowly, doubt creeps in.

It was a joy-filled evening at our 1st Annual Mommy & Son Buck-A-Roo Ball held at the ProRodeo Hall of Fame. Moms and their little cowboys came dressed to the nines in their Western wear.

The group twirled, stomped, and boot-scoot boogied the night away. The S’mores making station was a highlight of the evening along with face painting and photo booth. Our guests also enjoyed a scavenger hunt through the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame Museum. It was truly an unforgettable night.

Like many others, I struggle with seasonal depression. Especially here in Colorado, where the sun disappears behind the mountains much earlier than it does while living out on the plains (Kansas native here).

The days are short and the nights are long. I often want to snuggle up on the couch and only leave my house in cases of grocery shopping and daycare drop-offs. Dreamy, I know.

Over the years, I’ve realized that there are adjustments I can make to beat the seasonal sadness that comes with the changing seasons. Here are a few tips that have helped me overcome the fall slump:

Teaching kids the importance of being kind is a lot harder than I thought it would be. Partly because I had to look at myself and realize I am not as kind as I could be. Or want to be. It’s not as much fun telling your littles to be kind and then having them point out when you are not. It is humbling and embarrassing.

I have good ideas, but have not been leading by example as much as I should. I need to be teaching my kids to be kind by doing it myself.

The Colorado Wave of Light is for those who’ve walked through any kind of pregnancy OR infant loss.

The Wave of Light, provides an opportunity for bereaved families, along with their loved ones, to join together in a community candlelight vigil, a “Reading of the Names” ceremony, a reflective walk through 50,000 pink, blue, and white lights, and receive a message of encouragement. There'll be food trucks and a special “Kid’s Corner” for kids who’ve lost siblings, so bring your family with you.
