What an awesome guy to work with. I’ll never forget our times cruising around the Colorado State Fair in a golf cart, dodging women trying to get a picture with good old Mike Daniels.
After 12 years of being in broadcast this will be my last week in the business. Thank you for allowing me to tell your stories throughout the years. From Texas to Colorado it's been one hell of a trip!

AJ Vega is an award-winning Photojournalist for KOAA News5 who got his start in the business working for the NBC, FOX and CBS affiliates in east Texas. There he picked up the skills necessary to become a professional storyteller. One of his biggest assignments while in Texas was covering the 2014 Fort Hood shooting.
Shortly thereafter, AJ moved to Colorado Springs to expand his experience to include covering political debates and the Planned Parenthood shooting.
"Every morning when I look at the Front Range, I am blown away with how much the mountains look like a painting. The mountains give me a peace of mind. They are a constant reminder to take it easy and to live life to the fullest. I’ve always felt as if the 'mountains were calling me... home.'”
AJ has earned multiple awards from the Colorado Broadcasters Association for his work in the market.
"I am blessed to have been able to witness and experience many once in a lifetime type of experiences. From slicing through clouds in a fighter jet, to seeing multiple presidents, even witnessing the world's largest bowl of salsa be made and eaten (in Jacksonville, Texas)."
He's actively involved in the community as he volunteers with the Salvation Army, is an avid gardener, and enjoys the opportunities to see live entertainment in Colorado.
"In the Spring of 2019, I got to meet Susan and Matthew. Susan, was a music therapist and for 17 years she worked with Matthew who is diagnosed with down syndrome. She and Matthew’s parents allowed me to sit in and film a session for my story. What I captured that day was one of the most beautiful displays of human kindness I have ever filmed. A few weeks after the story aired, Susan was killed in a car accident. I had no idea that that one story I filmed would become this woman's legacy. Even through that tragic loss, it reminds me why I am a photojournalist. I will never forget this woman and her story. I capture moments as they are happening and tell them meaningful stories."
