PUBLISHERS MESSAGE
It’s with a heavy heart that Donn Albright passed away June 19th. He was 87 and in the past year had severe health issues. While I worked with Donn since the 1990s he was far more than Ray Bradbury’s bibliographer. He became a good friend of mine and will be sorely missed.

Donn edited most of our Ray Bradbury titles. He would visit Ray in California several times a year and return with outtakes and sample chapters that Bradbury wasn’t happy with. Gauntlet began publishing Bradbury’s classics (The October Country, The Illustrated Man, The Halloween Tree and Something Wicked This Way Comes, to name a few) with Donn adding material to make our Bradbury titles unique.

I asked Ray a number of times to publish Dark Carnival, his first collection. Through the nineties he refused to allow his first collection to be published. Donn came up with an idea that changed his mind.

Bradbury, a gifted artist, had numerous oil paintings. Donn suggested we take the best and tell Ray it would be the cover art for Dark Carnival. All of a sudden Ray became enthusiastic and agreed to allow us to publish the book. Donn added several stories that had been pulled from the initial 1947 release (for space reasons).

Since then Donn had a hand in publishing all of our Bradbury signed limiteds. He stitched together a number of revisions of the unpublished novel Masks (with Ray’s approval) for a coherent beginning, middle and end, as well as adding bonus material that Bradbury had discarded.

One of my favorite Bradbury titles was Match To Flame, Bradbury’s journey to Fahrenheit-451. The book included both published and unpublished short stories and incomplete novellas – all which illuminated Ray’s writing process. And last year, with his daughter Lizzy, he co-edited Phoenix-451, script adaptations of Fahrenheit-451 (see below for an elist special on this title).

Gauntlet's layout designer, my eldest child Dara, shared that they have fond memories of the times we'd get on a three-way-call with Donn to clarify book details. Donn would be the first to admit that he wasn't the best at email, which we had teasingly confirmed to him for this to be true. Therefore, whenever we have book details to discuss, it was best to do so over the phone. Whether it was a conversation between just the two of us, or if Dara was included, Donn would treat us to stories about Ray throughout the course of our visit. This is why "working" with Donn oftentimes felt more like a pleasure and a treat, as opposed to a dry business exchange.

Ray Bradbury’s legacy was enhanced by Donn, and for this we should all be eternally grateful. I’ll miss Donn, yet celebrate him every time I pluck one of my Bradbury books from my shelf.

PUBLISHERS MESSAGE

I’m sad to say we lost another acclaimed author who rose to fame in the 1970s. Ray Garton passed away April 21 from cancer. He was 61. I didn’t work with Ray nearly as much as I wanted to due to health issues that plagued him for the twenty years I knew him.

Ray was one of the foremost authors of the splatterpunk movement. He took monsters that had been written about for well over one hundred years and put a new spin on the existing mythology. LIVE GIRLS, for instance, featured vampires. Gauntlet published his two books dealing with werewolves, RAVENOUS and BE***AL. Much of his work featured s*x and horrific violence. But, like a few other authors, his use of s*x and violence wasn’t a gimmick or gratuitously used when the author was stuck in a corner with nowhere to go with the plot of the novel. In this, he reminded me of the late Jack Ketchum.

Before we agreed to publish his werewolf novels I had approached him to write a short story for BROTHERS IN ARMS, a tribute to Richard Matheson’s BEARDLESS WARRIORS. He quickly agreed, but several months later had to bow out due to health issues. It was therefore an honor to publish RAVENOUS and BE***AL. He was well enough to write a new introduction for RAVENOUS.

Ray was a kind soul and he will be missed greatly. Fortunately, he left behind a treasure trove of great books that set him apart from others in the splatterpunk movement.

PUBLISHERS MESSAGE

Many have the misguided belief that Richard Matheson made a fortune off of Will Smith’s "I am Legend" in 2007. After all the film grossed over $77 million it’s opening weekend and worldwide grossed $585,532,684. Matheson received numerous calls congratulating him on his windfall.

In truth Matheson didn’t make a penny from the film. The only money he made were royalties on additional copies of his book that were sold. Not much at all. So, why didn’t Matheson rake it in with this blockbuster (and highly flawed) film?

Years earlier Matheson sold the rights to I AM LEGEND to Hammer films in the UK. He wrote a screenplay based on his novel, which was faithful to the book. Both U.S. and UK censors wanted major revisions. The film was too violent, they said. Neville, the central character was living in sin with a woman he wasn’t married to. Censors wanted a priest to marry them. The only problem was there were no priests...only vampires and Neville. The censors went on and on and, to their credit, both Hammer Films and Matheson refused to make the changes that were demanded.

As a result Matheson lost the rights to the film. Four versions of Matheson’s book were adapted for film, none of which used Matheson’s script. Matheson had no say or involvement in any of the film adaptations. He was disappointed with all four versions.

Gauntlet Press has published Matheson’s “I Am Legend” screenplay (and details of its censorship) three times: in BLOODLINES (a sold-out signed limited), VISIONS DEFERRED (which also includes two other Matheson screenplays) and RICHARD MATHESON’S I AM LEGEND SCREENPLAY (CENSORED AND UNPRODUCED). Only the last is still available. All three are edited by Mark Dawidziak, a Matheson scholar.

There is no reason Matheson’s screenplay should not have been adapted. Matheson wrote the screenplay for Steven Spielberg’s first major hit, DUEL. Spielberg made just one change. Matheson wrote 22 episodes of THE TWILIGHT ZONE. Rod Serling made no changes in Matheson’s scripts. Matheson wrote two Kolchak Movies of the Week, filmed with minimal changes. There were more. So, it wasn’t as if Matheson couldn’t write a screenplay.

There is a rumored sequel in the works (actually has been for years, though at times a prequel was contemplated). If a sequel comes to pass the Matheson estate will make some money based on his characters being used. But it won’t be an extravagant amount. And before he died Matheson was never contacted to write a screenplay for a sequel or prequel.

More so than the money he never made, Matheson's major disappointment was that his vision of I AM LEGEND never made it to the screen. We are all the worse for it.
