The KOAA News5 studios are located in the heart of one of the fastest growing regions in the country. From the late 1800’s to current day, Southeast Colorado has provided the lifestyle craved by many. The area supports an incredible variety of climates, businesses and cultures. Communities are built along the edge of Rockies, nestled into quaint mountain valleys, and built proudly on the majestic plains. KOAA’s market area is BIG; covering 30,000 square miles. And since 1953, KOAA News5 has proudly served this diverse and culturally rich corner of Colorado.
KOAA News5’s broadcast tower is located at the top of Cheyenne Mountain in Colorado Springs. The station’s signal reaches the borders of Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico. To the north the signal extends to the edge of El Paso County and Fremont County to the west. All told, KOAA sends its broadcasts signal to over one million viewers.
The station hit the airwaves on June 29, 1953 with studios located in Pueblo, Colorado under the call letters KCSJ. Eight years later, the owners of KOA-TV in Denver, Colorado purchased KCSJ and changed the call letters to KOAA.
In 1969, KOAA became the first station in the region to broadcast in color, and it expanded its operations into daily news coverage. Then in the 1970s, as Colorado Springs was booming, KOAA saw its popularity grow substantially in the northern viewing area, and especially in El Paso County. Then, in November 1977 KOAA was purchased by Cordillera Communications and soon after the station’s primary broadcast facility was moved to Colorado Springs.
With a fresh investment of technology and manpower, the station began its ascent to news dominance. By 1982 KOAA’s Eyewitness News was the top-rated newscast at 10, and soon after ranked number one in other time periods. During this era of growth, KOAA established itself as a champion of the community by supporting local outreach organizations, digging into far-reaching investigations, and by providing vital information during emergency situations.
Over the years, the station adopted a guardian brand; a culture of looking out for others in need. This focus has developed into newscast that is uniquely balanced between hard-hitting coverage and emotional storytelling. KOAA continues to be the dominant news provider in Southeast Colorado and delivers critical information to its primary broadcast channel, all digital media platforms, a secondary broadcast channel called News5 Now. Technology continues to evolve, but KOAA remains firm in its role as a community champion. The station remains the first choice for viewers and users, no matter what the platform, and it will remain the station that is Always Watching Out For You.
