Congrats Kayli and Mike!! Hilton Melbourne Beach Oceanfront, I Do Florida Weddings and Space Coast Weddings were rockstars when weather had other plans for their outside ceremony location! Surrounding yourself with competent, professional vendors on your wedding day is SO IMPORTANT! What could have been a little stressful, turned out to be absolutely perfect! This time of year is slower at the resorts. I take this time to refine playlists and find new ways to connect with a less interactive audience. My goal this year is to do 3 things at the resort poolside DJ gigs.

1. Give them what they expect.
2. Give them something they forgot about.

This subject comes up a lot in the dj groups and forums. Hereโ€™s a good rule of thumb for volume.

How loud should the music be at a wedding?

Most mobile djspeakers will go up to about 130db but that is turned all the way up and the sound measured at the speaker. Decibel levels mean nothing when it comes to sound levels at events. Instead of considering db levels consider the ambient noise of the room/crowd.

Ceremony Prelude Music should be audible from the back row. Loud enough to hear what song is playing but low enough so that people can easily talk over it. If people have to struggle to speak over the music the crowd will become too loud and the serene, reverent, ceremony vibe will be lost.

Cocktail Hour music should be loud enough to fill the area but people should be able to talk over the music. The music should be loud enough to be clear and get some toes tapping but not loud enough to encourage dancing.

Dinner Music should be set just above the ambient noise of the room. You donโ€™t want talking and clanging dishes to overpower the music but you donโ€™t want people to force themselves to try and speak louder than the music. There a a definite Goldilocks zone for dinner music. I find myself adjusting it throughout dinner.

Dance Music should be played loud enough to make it impossible to speak comfortably near the dance floor. If the music isnโ€™t loud enough people will start to talk instead of dance. This is one of the many reasons why the speakers and the dj must be located at the dance floor.

Once dinner is served, guests naturally engage in conversations, line up at the buffet, visit the bar, take bathroom breaks, enjoy the Photo Booth, and more. When it's time for speeches, it becomes nearly impossible to gather the attention of everyone in the room. By following this order, everyone will already be seated, the videographer and photographer will be in place, and the caterers will have poured the champagne.
