As its name suggests, Commentatio (kah-men-TAH-tee-o) is all about commentary; it’s my home for observations on American life from a variety of angles. My aim is to view events and issues on a deeper level than we find in the daily news cycle and place our social, political and cultural institutions in an historical context. Not everyone will agree with those judgments, of course, and that is a go

od thing. Preaching to the choir is dull for both the preacher and the choir. Engaging with something thought-provoking rather than having our preexisting beliefs confirmed is a lot more worthwhile. It also bears noting, one meaning of the Latin word commentatio is “discourse.” What I publish here is not only intended to teach and inform even as I learn myself, but also to serve as the basis for discussion and debate.

I've finally and officially launched my Substack. It's been a long, long road getting to this point but we're finally here.

I'll be telling the full story about that as we go along. Suffice to say, for now, I knew I wanted to be a writer by the second grade (seriously). To finally have the opportunity to do it is pretty exciting.

My name is Kevin J. Rogers. I’m a journalist, researcher and author, and the executive director of The Modern Whig Institute.

After studying political science at Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. I embarked on a varied career in public advocacy, banking and the hospitality industry before becoming a full-time business writer in 2004.
