Clifton Clowers (1891-1994) was the subject of the 1962 hit song, “Wolverton Mountain,” the lyrics of which begin:
They say don't go on Wolverton Mountain
If you're looking for a wife
'Cause Clifton Clowers has a pretty young daughter
He's mighty handy with a gun and a knife.
“Wolverton Mountain” was co-written by Merle Kilgore as a birthday present for Clifton Clowers, his uncle. Kilgore was a friend of Hank Williams, and he co-wrote the song “Ring of Fire” with June Carter Cash.
Clifton Clowers really did live atop Wolverton Mountain, near Center Ridge (Conway County), for most of his life. By all accounts, he was a kind, educated man who farmed, hunted, fished and played several musical instruments. He could read and write in Latin and Greek and usually used his knife for whittling, not scaring off suitors. None of that would make for a very interesting song though. Merle Kilgore’s friend Claude King (who’d never met Clowers) convinced him that the lyrics needed a little changing to make it more interesting, adding the line “Clifton Clowers might take my life.” Suddenly, a gentle World War I veteran was transformed into one of the world’s most overprotective fathers. By the way, Clowers had six children—four sons and two daughters, and the family used to jokingly question which daughter was the “pretty” one mentioned in the song.
“Wolverton Mountain” became one of the biggest hits of 1962. It spent nine weeks at the top of Billboard’s country chart, reached number three on the easy listening chart and number six on the pop charts. It’s been recorded by Hank Williams, Jr., Nat King Cole, Louis Armstrong, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Southern Culture on the Skids, among others.
Pictured is Mr. Clowers, who at age 100, was still plowing his land. He lived to be 102.
