Saturday I attended SDS Darkness 1 hosted and taught by Strategic Dark Solutions in Garretsville, OH at the Southington Hunt Club. This course was a crawl, walk, run approach to night vision, not just using the equipment to shoot, but to observe our environments, navigate terrain, and utilize our weapon systems. Students ranged from local law enforcement, to SWAT, K9, prior military, and vetted civilians. Strategic Dark is truly an asset to the local Northeast, Ohio training community selflessly sharing their immense knowledge earned in blood, their company motto “By those in harms way” is apparaent throughout their curriculum with clear, concise, experience based knowledge and instruction. Joined by other great shooters and like minded individuals this was a class I was really looking forward to and did not disappoint. I am looking forward to attending future offerings from SDS. The slickster has done right by me the past year. Along with some other choice pieces of kit from , and this set load out has served me well. As I continue to modify my gear I’m moving on to the FCPC but wanted to take one more look at what’s worked for me thus far.

I wanted an Ohio flag patch in Multicam for my kit, discovered they didn’t really exist, so I had them made. I had to do a bit of convincing to get it done, but in the end a Michigan based company complied. The results are some awesome laser cut, Infra Red reflective, Multicam, Ohio flag patches. These are available now in our hastily prepared online store, link in bio.

Sometimes you go to the range with 3 different loads wanting to check zero and gather some data on performance. Sometimes you go to the range with 3 different loads to check zero and suddenly your suppressor is ruining your life. I had one of those evenings yesterday but this highlights the importance of training with ALL your gear and ensuring everything functions flawlessly. There will always be some degree of shifting point of impact when you remove your suppressor, but yesterday I experienced some really bizarre stuff when I was checking zero. I created a super solid shooting position using bags from Wiebad, felt super strong on the gun, groups with no suppressor 3” high of point of aim, but 10 rounds stacked into an 1” square. Throw the suppressor on…….same position, same ammo, 2.5” groups in a random peppering of rounds. So I was that guy last night excited to gather data on 3 different loads, instead I threw 90 of the same down range trying to find out what on earth is going on with my rifle. So in the end of the day I exhausted the daylight and will have to sort this out next week. Word on the street is 55gr projectiles coming out of a 10.3” bbl suppressed are super unstable, so we shall see what 62gr and 77gr do to the equation. (I DID clean my T1 glass before I started pulling triggers)

Sometimes you are just in the right place at the right time to accidentally get into an LMT 10.5” upper for a MK18 Mod 0-ish pistol build. I’m not usually a fan of anything with a FSP but this thing is pretty handy. LMT factory complete upper, KAC rail, with a FailZero BCG. Time will tell if this thing stays or goes, but for now I tossed a Larue handstop on there, dropped it onto an Aero Precision pistol lower, will probably put an Aimpoint T1 or T2 on top, and call it good to go as a handy truck gun.

The gun industry supply chain has been hit hard lately. We began purchasing new inventory a bit over a month ago and things are just now starting to find their way to us. We have a small supply of Surefire Wardens available in both Black or Dark Earth, these are NOT direct thread and DO require a Surefire muzzle device, multi-cal. Shoot us a DM if you need one of these bad boys in your life, accessory pricing includes shipping, these are making their way to your door step to the tune of $170.

I needed to do some simple off the body carry today in a non cool, not tactical, beat up, whatever Kelty backpack with no fancy velcro panels or molle. Here is what I carried;

* Smith & Wesson M&P 4.25” 9mm in a RCS phantom
* Surefire X300 (170 lumen version)
* 1 extra 17rd 9mm magazine loaded with Speer gold dot
* Zip loc IFAK with gloves, KN95 mask, halo seals, quick clot, izzy, duct tape, trauma shears, and a SOF-T tq
* Tylenol and eyedrop singles (allergies)

I kept things fairly simple using the front admin pocket of the backpack for my gear, the largest compartment of which managed to fit an old school RCS phantom for my pistol, the pocket pressure fit the holster allowing a reasonable draw. I kept the trauma shears in a cardboard liner that filled the width of the pen pocket to keep the shears upright, a SOF-T tourniquet fit the adjacent pocket perfectly to round out my med gear. Plenty of small pockets for my boo boo stuff and some pens, kept the rest of the backpack open for my rain jacket, sunnies, and some water bottles. I’d like to jump into a dedicated off body carry type bag set up for days like today, I have my eyes on a few options, but for now this is what I had to work with for today.

Bringing some focus back to the pistols; I’m chasing the dream of the perfect holster. These are 2 offerings from Blackhawk out of their new T-series. One is a more low profile, level 1 retention type holster where as the other is a light-bearing level 3 duty rig with hood. These things are incredibly rigid and solid, the material has very little to no flex. This arrived in the mail today and I’ll be doing some dry fire drills the next few days to become familiar with their retention system before I hit the range. Out of the box the most impressive feature hands down is the mounting solution. The level 3 style has a bit of a drop belt slide where as the other features a 0 drop clamping style belt mount. Both mounts feel sturdy and offer adjustability for different size belts. The retention system is a user side paddle actuated by the thumb during a natural acquisition of the pistol grip. I will be doing some comparison between my current holster and these and am excited to see how these fair.

A little bit of front end maintenance; I recently swapped out my white light from a Surefire X300 at 12:00 to a duel fuel Surefire M600 in a Larue mount at 3:00 so it was time for some cable management and some thought into overhauling the entire front end of my rifle. I had previously kept this rifle simple via my choice of light, and a straight forward BCM vertical grip, the X300 left quite a bit to be desired and the VFG just didn’t fit my grip style so in the end they were due for the chopping block. The Larue HandStop is such a simple device with such positive impact on grip and control, plus the added benefit of index clips with wire routing capabilities. These have been a favorite of mine for years and I’m glad to have one back on my go to rifle. A constant work in progress, but for the time being I’ll shoot this for a while.

The armor market has changed immensely since I made my last purchase 8 years ago. The availability of quality armor has sky rocketed as has the available options, materials, and vendors to choose from. I have been fortunate enough to network with some incredibly well educated, experienced, and skilled professionals with a vast knowledge in the armor market. Eight years ago under the guidance of Mike Martin at AT Armor I made the selection to purchase and wear Velocity Systems P34 plates. They fit my needs at the time, met every threat level I was concerned with, and came in at a nominal weight that I was willing to carry. Over the past few years some articles, recertification, and all in all confusing data had been released about the P34 plates and I decided it was time to make a change. Mike lent me his ear to discuss my needs and took the time to educate me on special threat plates, as well as some of the updated information surrounding current NIJ standards. I did some extensive research following these conversations and ended up selecting the LTC 26605 swimmer cut plate. These are NIJ lvl4 stand alone certified, come in under 7lbs for a 10” x 12” plate, and were available readily at a handful of reputable vendors. Take the time to do the research and take a long and hard look at who you choose to buy armor from. What works for me, may not work for you, and what threats I determined to be of worry may not be of much concern for your uses. I am beyond appreciative of AT Armor and their sharing of knowledge and guidance from my first purchase 8 years ago, to helping me navigate the armor options available to me in 2020.
-
I purchased this set of LTC plates from another exceptional company, Saber Solutions, LLC as AT Armor did not carry LTC products. I wanted to give credit where credit was due to both AT and Saber Solutions for helping me find what works for me. I choose to spend my money, and invest in my safety with genuine and honest business people such as these two individuals.

Med post part 2, first line belt IFAK;
-
A few weeks back I posted my new IFAK set up for my plate carrier, now we move down to the first line belt. I chose the BFG micro TKN as my pouch of choice. Esquire Arms in the past has been a BFG dealer and I have always been a fan of their innovative products. This pouch met my needs with a belt mount option, and a unique sleeve design that allows the kit to deploy from the right or left side. Paired with the BFG TQ hammock I was able to compile a kit that meets all the major needs of immediate emergent medical intervention for what threats I realistically face when training and shooting. As always, seek professional instruction on the gear you carry, practice, continue to study, and remember your medical supplies expire, as do the skillsets necessary to use them, stay sharp. I did not initially include a decompression needle in the IFAK on my plate carrier but after seeking additional training have added one. Here is what I will be wearing on my belt;
- Combat gauze
- Pressure bandage
- Nitrile gloves
- Nasal Airway
- Chest seals
- Frog tape
- Decompression needle
- CAT tourniquet

Your skillsets will not develop on their own, you must seek out training and instruction to build the foundation as a shooter and continue to push forward once that foundation is built to maintain and improve those skills.

This picture popped up on my Facebook memories today, May 4, 2012, just over 8 years ago I began seriously investing in myself by seeking training and information that was relevant to my mission, my jobs, and my goals. I was a civilian gun owner, occasional competitive pistol shooter, preparing to enlist in the IDF, wishing to show up with that foundation built ready to learn with muscle memory and experience to fall back on. I sought out trainers that I felt would help me achieve my goals and I had some of the best experiences I’ve ever had while running a gun. This course was a shoot house course instructed by Ken Hackathorn hosted by Castle Defense, LLC with assistance by Joe Barnsfather of Superior Fi****ms LLC with a focus on individual gun owners and home defense. I left this course with a new understanding of use of cover, improved mechanics with my pistol, and a notebook full of new questions for the next time I hit the range. This course was incredibly relevant to my mission and goals at that time, I began to forge a new understanding of personal responsibility from this course, no one is coming to save you, do what needs to be done, always act with purpose. I look forward to being able to attend more courses that fit my new goals and mission for 2020 this year. Photo credit
