As a third-generation educator, the importance of knowledge and meaningful educational practices runs deep in my veins. Last week, I opened up about how my oldest child struggled in a traditional care program and how we pivoted to a Montessori and hybrid homeschool model that better supports his unique sensory needs.
For a decade, I served as a public educator and practitioner of research. Working in higher education, I often found myself in the critical role of bridging gaps to ensure students didn’t fall through the cracks. Now, as a parent, I face challenges like any of us. When hard times come, I lean on what I know—research, practice, and intuition—to navigate, adapt, and advocate.
But let’s be real: our educators are burned out. Teachers are leaving the workforce in record numbers. According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), nearly 55% of teachers reported considering leaving the profession earlier than planned in 2022 due to burnout and workload demands. The drive for efficiency often undermines both teachers and students. Standardized testing, much like your weight at the doctor’s office, is just one data point—not the full picture of a child’s abilities or potential.
