Big news and plenty of holiday cheer at Wally’s Rentals. Rodney Metcalf has been busy spreading the festive spirit by putting up Christmas lights at their Clayton Road location—bringing a little extra joy to everyone driving by.

Earlier this year, Elegance Party Rentals/Wally’s Rentals proudly joined the JRM Equipment family, owned by the fantastic mother/son duo, Jerri and Rodney Metcalf. This woman-owned company, this local business serves the community with top-quality tool rentals and event equipment.

Rodney has also been hard at work upgrading the shop with newer, modern equipment, and it’s really starting to show! Stop by, say hello, and let them help you with all your rental needs—whether it’s tools for a project or gear for the perfect event.

Correction: In our December 2024 issue, the front page story titled "New faces join City Councils in tight races" included an error in the vote count in the Clayton election. The final official vote count is shown in the graphic below. In the print issue, the mail ballot count was inadvertently picked up. Rich Enea was top vote getter by 156. Holly Tillman was 156 votes behind in second place. We apologize for the error which doesn't change the standings.

U.S. Army Ranger First Lt. Jerry Sundstad was killed in Burma on June 5, 1944, when he engaged with Japanese forces in the Battle of Myitkyina. The following month his only child, daughter Dianne, was born in Santa Barbara. Over the next 80 years Clayton resident Dianne, her mom Dorothy and generations of the family never heard a definitive word as to exactly how Sundstad was killed or, more importantly, where his remains were. That all changed this summer. Click below to continue reading.

Our Story

On May 9, 2003, we published our first issue of the Clayton Pioneer covering Contra Costa’s smallest city.

In the intervening years, we expanded our reach to cover Concord, the county’s largest city – starting with the publication of The Concordian in 2008 (which we sold to our partner in 2010) and continuing with the Concord Pioneer in 2014.

In January 2019, we combined the two papers into one large monthly covering both cities and reaching more some 38,500 households and businesses in Clayton and Concord.

The Pioneer is a true community newspaper with local writers, advertisers and long-time local publishers.
