Blue Jays stomp Atchison in season opener

The Junction City High School varsity boys basketball team opened the 2024-25 season Friday with a win by more than 20 points, defeating Atchison 74-51 on the road.

The Blue Jays outscored Atchison in all but one quarter, starting with one in which they scored twice as many points, 18-9 in the first quarter. Larkin Turner scored 6 of those points with a couple of field goals and two free throws; Isiah Handy scored 4 with a field goal and two free throws; Lovell Autry, a field goal and a free throw; Jackson Austin, a 3-pointer; and JaTwaan Williams, a field goal. Atchison scored 5 points on free throws and the rest on a couple of field goals in the first quarter.

In the second quarter the Blue Jays scored almost four times the points, 23-6 to put the score at 41-15 going into the half. Autry scored the most points, 13, including four field goals, a 3-pointer and two free throws. Williams scored a couple of field goals; Austin, a 3-pointer and a free throw and Jayden Mears, a field goal. Atchinson scored a couple of field goals and a couple of free throws.

In the third quarter, the Blue Jays were outscored by Atchinson, whom put 18 points on the board, 5 more points than the Blue Jays, for a score of 54-33 at the end of the third quarter. Atchinson put up five field goals, two 3-points and made a couple of free throws.

For the Blue Jays Autry scored two field goals and a free throw in the third quarter; Turner, a field goal and two free throws; Cedric Albanese, a field goal and Williams and Brody Boeckman both landed a free throw.

The Blue Jays finished Atchinson off with 20 points, while they scored 18. Handy dropped in a 3-pointer and a field goal, Jordan Weston, a 3-pointer; and Turner, Mears, Autry, Williams, Boeckman, and Austin all scored a field goal.

Autry led in scoring with 23 points, followed by Tuner, who scored 12. Austin, Handy, and Williams all scored 9; Mears, 4; Boeckman and Weston, 3 and Albanese, 2.

The Blue Jays will be back in action 7:30 p.m.Friday, Dec. 13 with another game on the road at Hays. The Lady Jays will open their season there with a game at 6 p.m.
