EDUCATOR • OF • THE • MONTH 🌎🍎✏️

Lauren Drake, our July Educator of the Month, has been teaching since 2010. She has experience teaching from 6th grade through 12th grade and currently teaches English III and IV at Clarksville High School. Mrs. Drake’s classroom allows “students [to] harness the digital and traditional tools at their disposal to delve deeply into literature.” She also shares her personal goal for her students: “While it is imperative our students leave high school college and career ready, my primary goal is for every student to feel seen and affirmed, and hopefully we can have some fun and laughs along the way.” Mrs. Drake’s expectations in her classroom are simple: be responsible, be respectful, and be engaged, and it sounds like she instills that in her personal philosophy, as well. Next year, she will have a greater reach on the number of students she can impact by serving the school’s phenomenal educators as Clarksville High’s new academic coach. Congratulations!

S U P E R • M O M | JULY 2024 🖤

Brittany Pace-Raley, the nominated Super Mom for July, is the mother to two-year-old Brooks, and their huskies, Bruce and Badger. She also holds the title of REALTOR®, which keeps her pretty busy driving all over town looking at houses. Outside of her family and her job, she also enjoys spending time with her friends, usually working out or relaxing on the boat.

When asked about her favorite part of being a parent, Brittany responded that “being able to watch my son grow [and] learn is so rewarding. I love being able to pour all of my love and energy into giving him the best childhood possible and creating forever memories.” Even though Brittany enjoys all of the growth in her child and the memories they share together, parenting is tough. When asked about the challenging aspects of parenting, she shared that “going through a separation while having to be a single parent and mom, work full time, and be in mom-mode full time with my family over 18 hours away was an extremely difficult chapter. I proved to myself that anything is possible, and I wanted my son to see that no matter how hard life gets that we will push through and come out on the other side.” Amazing show of strength!

Brittany shared the following advice for any parents out there with similar struggles: “Less is more- you don’t need all the fancy toys, nicest things, wipe warmer, fancy baby items, etc.; by starting out with the minimum, your baby will adapt! [Also}, don’t compare your child to others; they are all so unique. Don’t harp on the milestones, or feel like a bad mom if other kids are doing more than your child; they all catch up eventually!”

Congratulations, Super Mom- you deserve this title! 🫶

SMALL • BUSINESS • SPOTLIGHT

Sunny Day Studios opened in December of 2022 less than ten minutes from downtown Clarksville. Lindsay Amabile founded a play place that offers sensory play geared for children 18 months to 6 years old, but all children are welcome. Lindsey is a native to Clarksville. She lives with her husband and their three young boys. She is a former educator and mother of three young boys, which has inspired everything she has done with Sunny Day Studios. She added, “I saw a need for a sensory play-based studio in Clarksville,” so she worked to provide for the need in our community.

This play place offers sensory play that focuses on activities that engage your child’s senses, helping them develop language and motor skills. It also helps with cognitive growth, fosters social interactions, and encourages experimentation. When asked what sets her business apart from others, she shared, “we are a Reggio-inspired play studio. We offer walk-in play that is child led. We encourage children to create, imagine, and work together. [Our studio] has both inside and outside [play] areas. In our backyard, we host messy play days, water days, and other fun [activities] that encourage outdoor play!”

Another great aspect of Sunny Day Studios is that they are constantly rotating their sensory table themes. Some past themes include beach theme with seashells, ice play with boats, coffee shop theme with cups and coffee beans.

The mission of the studio includes: “We are a place for kids to learn through play. We encourage child-led play that is open-ended. We love to have messy play opportunities. We will never judge you or your kids for their behavior, so you have to apologize for that.”

They are walk-in-based, so no appointments or registrations are required! It is $10 for a single play day with no time limit. Children who do not walk are not charged. Sunny Day Studios offers an array of play passes. You can purchase 10 or 20 passes, as well as book parties. They also offer Sunday birthday parties. The birthday parties include all day indoor and outdoor play, sensory stations and toys, the art room, tables and chairs, and couches.

Sunny Day Studios also holds events that you can register for. Previously, they have held a Splash Party with Inflatable Clarksville, an Earth Day Event, and a Flamingo Painting Day.

You can also find Thistle Sweets TN’s macarons, as well as the local boys boutique O Hayden Boutique with products inside Sunny Day Studios that can be shopped and purchased.

Did you know we have an elephant sanctuary right here in Tennessee?! 🐘 🖤

Since 1995, The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee has provided home and care to 33 elephants. Currently, there are 12 elephant residents, with space to welcome more. The Sanctuary initially began on 110 acres and has since expanded to encompass multiple separate and protected, diverse habitats, spanning over 3,060 acres.

The Sanctuary is honored to provide lifelong care for elephants. The changing needs of elephants as they age require lifetime care plans. The shared commitment to each elephant’s health and well-being often leads to beneficial collaboration with other elephant facilities and owners. Elephants also come to The Sanctuary due to legal authorities’ actions, often related to violations of the Animal Welfare Act. In 2003, Delhi was the first elephant confiscated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) in North America. Delhi, an Asian elephant, spent over fifty years traveling and performing. Delhi was confiscated by USDA and placed at The Sanctuary after substantiated reports of inadequate care and inhumane treatment. The Sanctuary has been called to take eleven additional elephants rescued by authorities.Public awareness and subsequent action are essential to creating a better world for all elephants. Educating the public about the plight of elephants is important to The Sanctuary’s mission. Through the free Distance Learning programs, The Sanctuary reaches hundreds of school and community groups around the world teaching respect for wildlife while learning about the crisis facing Asian and African elephants. The Elephant Discovery Center on Main Street in Hohenwald offers hands-on, self-guided exhibits and educational programming that explores the many ways elephants shape our world.

The Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is closed to the public. The habitats are maintained specifically for the elephants and are not open to viewing. The best way to see the elephants is through their live-streaming EleCams, https://elephants.com/elecam/elecam-view-1.

Happy Father's Day! 🖤

Check out our Super Dad this month | Daniel Cotterell

By: Robyn Woodside
Daniel Cotterell was nominated as the June 2024 Super Dad. Daniel met his wife Amber in 2016, and they began dating about a year later. One year later to the day that they began dating, he popped the question and they got engaged. Their marriage started only three months later. Before beginning their family, they spent time together, traveling, and trying to see as much of the world as possible. On May 19th, 2021, their third wedding anniversary, they found out they were expecting a baby! The baby ended up being a little boy, whom they named Noah. Noah turned two this January. They recently found out that they are expecting another little boy who is due at the beginning of August. When asked about his family, Daniel said, “We love our little family and the life we’ve created together. We spent the first two years of Noah’s life dragging him along on our adventures as we travel as much as possible, and [we] plan to pick up where we left off early next year.” Daniel and his family attend Mosaic Church, and they have a goal of setting the best example of Jesus in their personal lives. Adding to this, he stated, “though we come up short more often that we’d like to admit.”

Outside of his family, Daniel is usually working. He said, “Not to say I work all the time because I certainly don’t. It’s just that other than work, we don’t do a whole lot without our boy.” Daniel has been with Montgomery County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for 14 years as an Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT). He explained, “My shifts are 12 hours long, and I rotate several weeks of days and several weeks of nights, allowing me far more time than most fathers and husbands get with their families]. Truthfully, it’s probably the thing I’m most grateful for in regards to my job; it’s a gift that you can’t put a price on.”

In addition to traveling, which is Daniel and his family’s favorite hobby, Daniel is also interested in writing. He is a self-published author via Amazon; he added, “I’ve been tossing around the idea of adding another. Spare time is just difficult to come by right now.”

When asked about his favorite thing about being a parent, Daniel responded, “Just one thing? I feel like it’s impossible to narrow down to just one. There’s so many little things, little moments that somehow become my favorites. Like the little smirk I get when I go to get him out of bed in the morning, or the hug when I leave for or get home from work. [However], if I had to pick one thing, I’d say making Noah smile.” He continued, “I know it sounds cheesy, but…there’s just something about when you get a chance to do something for or with your child, and they look up at you with the look of pure innocence, and complete joy. It’s like there’s literally nowhere else in the world they’d rather be, than right there next to you, doing whatever it is they are doing with you. It’s hard to explain, but in those moments, it’s like they just make everything worth it. The sacrifices, the sleepless nights, the overwhelming responsibility that comes with being a parent…All of it, completely worth it, when he looks up and smiles at me.”

Even with all of the positives Daniel had to share about parenting when asked about the most challenging obstacle with parenting, Daniel shared that this was a tough question to answer. He shared, “I don’t feel like there’s a whole lot I’ve had to overcome to this point. I guess if I had to try and give a halfway decent answer to that question, it would be the ‘baby phase’.” By this phase, he meant, “I found it incredibly difficult to learn how to be a parent, and how to take care of this little living and breathing human being, where there is absolutely no way to communicate with him. All they can do is cry, and you have to learn to differentiate between the different cries they have and try to use that to figure out what they need. I know so many people, moms especially, just love the baby phase and never want it to end. But for me, I found it incredibly difficult to navigate. Life is so much easier now that my son can speak and tell me what he wants and what’s the matter, even if I [can’t] understand him half of the time.”

With over two years of experience under his belt, and having navigated through what he describes as one of the hardest phases of parenting, when asked about any advice he could share to parents, Daniel said, “One thing someone told me before Noah was born is ‘the days are long, but the years are short.’ Noah is two, but I’d swear he was born like a couple of months ago. So that has to be one of the truest statements ever. You may have a stressful day here and there, and those days may seem to last forever, but in the big picture, having a child is one of the greatest gifts you could ever get, and the years fly by in the blink of an eye.”

In addition, Daniel also wanted to share another piece of advice: “Don’t miss the moment by looking back or looking forward. It’s easy when your baby is one to wish he or she was a newborn again, or to wish they were older so they could talk or [be] more self-sufficient. [However], I feel like I learned so very quickly how fast each phase comes and goes.” Daniel shared that he tries to enjoy each phase of life by looking at the positives and taking it all in. He said, “because soon I’ll wake up, and whatever ‘that thing’ is, he just won’t ever do it again; he’ll be on to something new. So enjoy it, all of it. I wish I had known that when I was stressing out about not being able to communicate with my son, but I won’t make that mistake twice.”

Also, Daniel added, “Anytime I talk to people about how much I’m enjoying this or that with my son, there are so many negatives people love to [add], like ‘just wait until…’. One favorite is, ‘just wait until he’s two.’ Well, he is two, and I’m having more fun now than I’ve had in my entire life. Of course, there are stressful things about parenting. It’s inevitable, but, again, having a baby is one of the greatest gifts you can ever receive. Enjoy every moment, because they pass so quickly.”
