Job 1 for the first game of the season is to win easily at home, avoid terrible injuries and move on to the next game.
Mission accomplished.
The Golden Eagles of Southern Miss struggled against SEC opponent Kentucky.

I marvel at the colors in the rainbow when I see one going across the sky.
God’s beauty of these colors cannot be duplicated even though many have tried. There is something majestic about the arch of brilliant colors streaming across the sky. Many, as I do, find it worth looking at a rainbow because of its beauty.
Also, if anyone has ever seen the end of the rainbow please let me know and if there was for sure a pot of gold there.
Have you ever stopped to realize why we have rainbows?

In August 1945, in the waning days of World War II, the United States dropped two atomic bombs on cities in Japan. Four years later, the Soviet Union tested its first atomic weapon, and the Cold War began. Nuclear testing made its way to Mississippi through the underground detonation of two nuclear devices outside of Hattiesburg. Project Dribble, as it was known, was a joint effort of the United States Atomic Energy Commission and the United States Department of Defense. It was part of a larger program to assess remote detonation detection capabilities.

The prospect of Jackson again having its own, self-sustaining water system rests on its residents and their pocketbooks.
While the city is expected to receive around $800 million in federal funds for its water repairs, JXN Water head Ted Henifin knows that the money will one day dry out.
In Jackson, 51% of the city’s homes are occupied by renters, according to Census data. Rep. Ronnie Crudup, D-Jackson, said out-of-state landlords that aren’t keeping up with their properties, including the ones who had their water disconnected, are a known issue in the city.
The latest water bill collection rate from July was 73%, although the number’s fluctuated between the 50s and 70s over the last nine months. To reach the 2029 goal, Henifin said, they’ll need to reach 80% by next year and 90% by 2026.

I would love it at my house if just once a year, Sara the boys and I sat down and hammered out a budget.
We’d work on it for a month with each of my boys coming before Momma and me seeking funds for food, clothing, rent and -- of course -- transportation and leisure.
Sara and I would sit around our big wooden table in the room with a high ceiling and ponder the pros and cons of each request and pencil in expenditures based on revenue projections.

As this newspaper has said before, we think it is time the federal government finalizes Interstate 69. The Delta is the only part of the state that does not have an interstate highway and it shows.
Congressman Bennie Thompson was in Clarksdale this week to address the opening of the IRS Offices on the third floor of the Federal Building. That project will bring 50 jobs to the area. And your Clarksdale Press Register thanks Congressman Thompson for his help in funding this project.
We now urge Congressman Thompson to look ahead and see how construction of I-69 would bring untold commerce and jobs to Mississippi, the Delta and Clarksdale.

It doesn’t take long during a visit to Red’s Lounge to realize you’re in a one-of-a-kind setting – a place outside the realm of a normal club, more intimate, more personal.
Located in Clarksdale, Mississippi’s Art and Culture District, the boundary between the stage and the audience seems thinner at Red’s. The many characters that weave together the venues personality become defined and the banter unfolds between friends, family and strangers alike

Making public predictions on a Mississippi college football season is a capricious business.
Trust me, I know.
Depth at our schools is often thin. An injury or three at a key position can turn a potential 8-4 season into 4-8 quicker than you can say anterior cruciate ligament.
But here goes . . .

STARKVILLE -- Farms are the most prominent symbol of agritourism, but the industry contains numerous types of enterprises and entertainment.
The agritourism sector also creates additional income streams for producers and entrepreneurs and has been a proven community development tool in Mississippi, especially in rural areas.
Fall marks the time of year when this activity is at its peak, and one easy way to experience it firsthand with minimal advance planning is the Mississippi Hills Farm to Fork Foodie Trail. This 35-stop route across 19 full counties and parts of 11 others encompasses a variety of agritourism examples in the state’s northeastern quadrant.
Stops include the farms where commodities are grown and produced, and the restaurants, farmers markets and local stores where goods are sold.

Another step in the process of securing federal funding that will expand access to high-speed internet through Mississippi has been completed.

Initial proposals from two states were approved by the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration, according to a statement from NTIA this week.

Approval of the initial proposal is one of several steps required for states like Mississippi to gain access to federal funding set aside as part of the Broadband Equity, Access and Deployment (BEAD) program through the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act passed in 2021.

Extracurricular activities offer many benefits for children and teens, but parents should help young people set important boundaries when it comes to these activities.
“Participating in sports, music, dance and other activities not only helps children learn life skills, like time management and interpersonal skills, but also teaches them about themselves -- what things they are good at and what things they enjoy,” said Lori Elmore-Staton, a human development and family science specialist with the Mississippi State University Extension Service.

As the school year gets underway and the sound of marching bands fill the gridiron, the timeless tradition of gathering to watch football reignites the spirit of our communities. The Mississippi Association of School Superintendents knows that this love for sports is strong and reminds everyone that respect should be the name of the game whether you’re cheering on new players or celebrating starring seniors.
