Last chance for snow
There’s a unique mix of warm weather and mountain snow that makes heading to higher elevations a great idea. This video was taken in the Mt Baldy area. Video by Peter Weinberger
It’s hard to believe how much rain fell over the last few days (over 7.5 inches) and how that impacted mountain water runoff from the San Gabriel Mountains. Here’s a video from a filling San Antonio Dam following the runoff going north. Any storm photos to post? —PW
It’s obvious Claremonter Bill Buehler is enthusiastic about the holidays. Every year his collection of blowup Christmas figures make an appearance near Miramar and Bonnie Brea Avenues and light up his front yard at night. But during the day, the inflatables are deflated, creating a much different tornado aftermath look. Since all the figures are quite bright, nighttime is when they really shine. And it only takes several minutes to inflate the group, as Bill showed us. You can still see them on evenings into January. Courier video/Peter Weinberger
I was flying my drone to capture the sunset Friday, December 22, turned the drone around and there it was. Two huge rainbows, only getting brighter when it started to rain as the sun dropped in the horizon. And it literally was rising from a neighborhood in north Claremont. Did anyone else see and get visuals? Please post. Happy holidays! -PW
Mt. Baldy area snow after the storm
With clouds finally leaving the skies on Friday, here's an aerial view cruising along Ontario Peak on the right, then turning directly to Mt Baldy at 10,064 feet with eight-feet of snow. The good news is this record snow will be with us well into spring. We have more coverage at: claremont-courier.com. —PW
Baldy after the historic snow storm on February 25th, 2023
The once-in-a-generation storm that rolled through Southern California this weekend left up to eight feet of snow in the higher elevations at Mt. Baldy and about three feet of snow in Mt. Baldy Village.
The Courier took to the skies Sunday to show just how beautiful — and crowded — the road up to the mountain had become.
Talented CHS musicians compete for top spot
Every year, talented local high school musicians compete in the Dan Stover Memorial Instrumental Music Competition, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Claremont. This year’s winner from the January 28 competition was CHS junior Sebastian Quadrini. Quadrini will represent the Rotary Club of Claremont in their District 5300 competition in Las Vegas on May 6, where the winner will receive a $2,500 prize.
It may be warm here, but not at Mt. Baldy
Even with warming temperatures in the Southland, mountain temperatures remain cold with high winds. The Mt. Baldy area remains a dangerous place above 7,000 feet, as heavy snow creates whiteout conditions contributing to emergency rescues over the past two weeks. Here are scenes from Baldy Bowl shot Wednesday, January 31. Please be careful out there. —PW
Colby Circle Development Update
Here is a little Claremont development update — what a difference seven months can make.
The Docente Colby Circle development on Indian Hill Boulevard is almost ready for its first residents. The 95-unit project is broken into two phases: phase 1 consists of 17 homes, with 14 homes currently in escrow. Residents are scheduled to move in at the end of February. Phase 2 will be completed sometime this summer.
Construction closure leaves 10 Freeway a ghost town
It was definitely a strange sight Sunday morning as construction crews completed finishing touches on the Vineyard Avenue overpass, leaving parts of the 10 Freeway a relative ghost town.
To finish the work, the freeway will close 10 p.m. to 10 a.m., January 22 and 23 between Vineyard and Archibald avenues in Ontario. Courier video/Peter Weinberger
Heavy rains cause flooding on Mt. Baldy road
With heavy rain over the past 24 hours near Mt. Baldy Village, the cliffs along Mt. Baldy Road on Tuesday are soft causing debris to fall on the road. With over four inches of rain in the mountains, road and flooding conditions remain serious. The fast-moving storm should move out of the Claremont area quickly—after dropping over two inches of rain — leaving mostly cloudy skies and highs in the low-60s. Courier/video Peter Weinberger
Claremont Christmas Lights 2022
It’s Christmas time which means some Claremont residents dress up their homes for the holidays. What have been your favorite Claremont homes lit up? Here are some that we found last night 😊
Flying through clouds near Mt. Baldy
There nothing like flying over fresh snow Monday as storm clouds slowly leave the Mt. Baldy mountain and ski lift area. The hard part is avoiding those cool but wet clouds as much as possible. We are lucky we are so close to this natural beauty. Happy Holidays! —Peter Weinberger
The annual Claremont Holiday Promenade and Tree Lighting Ceremony took place last night to a rather large crowd. Families braved the cooler temperatures for a chance to see Santa and witness the lighting of the village tree in front of the Claremont Depot. The 2022 holiday season is officially underway!
