Claremont Little League’s previously red hot 12U All-Star team proved mortal after all, narrowly falling to tough competition at the Southern California State Little League Tournament. The section three champion Claremont team began the tournament with a convincing 13-7 win over La Mirada, extending their unbeaten postseason streak to 7-0. But on Sunday they faced Sweetwater Valley, who handed them a 6-4 loss. Their season ended Tuesday with a narrow 6-5 loss to Eastvale. CLL finished their postseason with a 7-2 record.

“I am thrilled to report the Claremont Courier picked up 12 California Journalism Awards this past Saturday. The ceremony at the Universal Sheraton Hotel honored the best of California journalism from 2023 and included nearly 3,000 entries from across the state. Though we didn’t win any first place awards this year (following a Courier record 19 wins — including five first place awards — for 2021, and nine more with three firsts in 2022), that the Courier, with our tiny staff and modest circulation, was among the finalists in 12 categories, was remarkable.”

We’re all gonna die. I’ve been with people in their final moments, and nobody’s yearning for more money or a bigger house. They all just want more time.”

“Aging has made a few things clear. The most useful realization has been the past is gone, the future is unwritten (thanks, Joe Strummer), and all we truly have is now. I strive to keep this front of mind these days. I don’t always succeed; I get trapped in the twin loops of life bustle and replaying past mistakes and lose it in the disorienting fog of everyday struggle. Ruminating on my failures is a self-defeating dead end. Work, politics, striving for approval, these things are not who I am. Being present in the moment and fully engaged with my family and actual life, that’s where it’s at. That’s the sweet spot.”

“It was a gorgeous 74 degree early spring afternoon at Pomona College’s Merritt Field, the kind of day that reaffirms one’s love of Southern California, complete with the typical late-May olfactory bounty of jasmine and fresh cut grass wafting in on the faintest of breezes. I was one of dozens of parents and caregivers dropping off our sons (and perhaps daughters) for day one of Claremont High School football camp. My boy, a 14-year-old rising freshman, had been looking forward to this for weeks. His excitement had become mine, as happens with kids.”

"On Saturday, Karie Krouse will host a gathering marking the third anniversary of her daughter Chloe’s death, at age 14, from an accidental fentanyl overdose. Krouse said she knows who supplied the pill that killed her daughter. Perhaps worse, the LA County Sheriff’s Department investigated her death, and according to Krouse, know who supplied the pill, but told her they do not have enough evidence to convince the district attorney to take the case. 'There’s nothing on Chloe’s phone,' Krouse told me Wednesday.
'There’s no transaction of money that we could print out. There’s just nothing on paper that can be used to bring to the DA to try to do anything about it.'

Big turnout at OLA to see this famous relic.

It’s not every day the public sees a 2,000-year-old artifact, but on Monday more than 3,000 people at Our Lady of the Assumption Church did just that, stopping in to catch a glimpse of the Relic of Saint Jude’s arm. That included the Quezaea family from Pomona who prayed in front of the relic at...

"Somehow so many of us found someone to put up with our weirdness, hangups, and obsessions, and before we knew it, we were parents. And, unbelievable as it may seem, unlike other major responsibilities in life — such as driving a car or going fishing — at press time there is still no license required for reproduction. Anyone can do it! The Wild West of procreation means even the most conspicuously unqualified among us are immediately expected to be capable, reliable guideposts for their new little humans."

"I tell my kids to stand up to bullies, that doing what’s right is often not the easy thing, and that speaking up when something is wrong is not only okay, it’s a requirement. I’ve also told them that when things do go wrong to be sure to look in the mirror before lashing out, that we have to ...
