You can see our sweet little buddy is still hanging in there! Commander did soooo well for auntie Sarah while we were in California and his eyes are looking really good. Our next hurdle to tackle is understanding the scabby itchy skin and random hair loss. I’ll be following up with both vets tomorrow on the phone to see what else we can do to get him some relief and 100% healed up and out of this cone🍊(even tho he really doesn’t seem to care 😂)🧡🥰🤞

Mark and I just returned home from completing and PR’ing our Thrills and Chills challenge for the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon weekend- we earned a medal for the Haunted Mansion 10k on Saturday and the Hocus Pocus Half Marathon on Sunday plus earned the Nightmare Before Christmas Challenge medal AND we earned our very first Coast to Coast Challenge medal for doing a 10 miler in Walt Disney World and a Half Marathon in Disneyland in the same calendar year!! Commander saw a specialist today and despite how awful he looks in photo 1 today, the appointment went great and he was an absolute angel that once again melted everyone’s hearts with how sweet he was 🧡 We also got pretty good news, all things considered- here is the exact notes from the hospital exam - Dr. says it’s common and should be treatable, but we will be managing his symptoms for life (which we already knew with FIV)
“Commander presented to the ophthalmology service for redness and squinting of the right eye. On examination, Commander appeared to have appropriate visual function but had notable signs of ocular pain in the right eye. Further examination revealed a moderate amount of active corneal inflammation in the right eye with multiple erosions on the corneal surface. Commander’s clinical signs and history are most consistent with keratoconjunctivitis secondary to feline herpes viral infection.
Feline Herpes Virus is a common occurrence in cats with the majority being infected at some point in their lives. The virus typically remains dormant within the body lifelong but can manifest in a variety of ways during times of stress or immunocompromise. Treatment is largely supportive, although some cases require treatment with a topical or systemic antiviral medication. Adjunct therapy with nutraceuticals such as Lysine and Fortiflora may be beneficial in select cases in preventing further flare-ups.”
Commander will continue with new eye drops to treat the virus and will have another check up in a few weeks 🤞 he still has some skin issues too but his upper respiratory infection symptoms are not currently present so the focus is his eye and keeping him on a supplement.
When Commander first arrived in our lives it was his left eye that was closed, and now it’s the right. He recovered before, and we are hopeful he will again. We’re also working hard to boost his immune system with supplements. So that’s it for now- all we can do is follow instructions, keep the house nice and calm, and hope for the best. In case anyone forgot photo 2 was the day we caught him 🧡

Our little sweetie pie - Commander, had his recheck this afternoon. Unfortunately, we are now headed to an emergency specialist this Thursday for his eye and another in the future for his skin, but they are all booked out until October.
I am thankful that his upper respiratory symptoms have improved and his appetite and energy levels are still intact, but we are likely dealing with something viral - keep sending healing vibes both for him and my momma heart 🍊 he has charmed everyone around him by being such a good boy throughout his health struggles 🧡 were tired but hopeful 🖤
Commander Update: another day, another vet visit. I wish I had better news, but after a few days of antibiotics, he has continued to decline, and now his right eye is very weepy, and he barely opens it. It’s deja vu to the day we rescued him, and it’s breaking my heart that he has to continue fighting and struggling with his health over a year and a half after his rescue.
We are home from our third vet visit in two weeks, and he’s fighting a pretty intense upper respiratory infection that’s also affecting his eyes. (exactly like when we caught him) And to top it all off, we now need to worry about Mooshi since they share space, and he is FIV positive, too. One or both of them are likely chronic carriers of URI and they have weakened immune systems. Commander has had eye, ear, and dental issues and Mooshi has had eye, and dental issues.
There is no apparent reason for why this happened. They both had their yearly checkups, vaccines, and blood work recently, and everything was fine. But now Orange cats blood sugar is off, too, so we’re just seeing the ugly side of rescuing a cat from years of neglect on the street.
We have a new eye med and are continuing with his antibiotics and adding in a new immune system supplement for his food. Luckily Commander has continued to eat and drink. He also received injectable meds. He didn’t cry at all in the car and that makes me even more devastated, he just doesn’t feel well and I’m very worried. Keep sending him healing vibes ✨😢
Commander Update: It’s been a tough week for our guy 🍊
We’ve been medicating Orange cat for his ear infection and skin allergies 🤧 but unfortunately, he started having some additional issues with rapid breathing, mouth-breathing and frequent sneezing, and weepy eyes. He’s been less playful but is still eating and drinking like normal. We went back to the vet, picked up antibiotics to treat him over the weekend, and discontinued the other meds for now.
We’re a bit worried about our boy and his weak immune system, so please send your healing vibes his way so he can turn the corner and start feeling better. We check in with the vet on Monday after a few days of new meds ✨🤞🖤🍊
p.s. he does have the cutest “about to sneeze” face in the last photo 🖤
No rest for the rescuers - Mooshi had his yearly exam and he did fantastic but laid it on pretty thick with the super sad cries and teary eyes. Does anyone else cry on the way to and from taking their pets to the vet even when it’s just a simple physical exam because of the sad cries? Or just me?
Commander was also seen again for new meds to relieve his ear infection and hot spots and has adapted to life in the cone pretty well. He goes back in a few weeks for a recheck so for now he gets out-of-cone time for eating and regular grooming (he can eat in the cone just chooses not to lol).
Both have forgiven me already and they were glad to see each other when we got home 🖤

Our poor little buddy- lots of people think Commander’s ears are so cute (which they are), but the damage from years on the street create a lot of ear infections.
He’s currently struggling with an ear infection and a mysterious seasonal allergic reaction resulting in various skin hot spots.
In order to keep him from scratching and licking and making things worse- we ordered this soft cone and it’s honestly the cutest thing I’ve ever seen, but also so sad lol. Our little orange slice. 🍊Send him healing energy ✨🧡

Everyday around this time, I start seeing the Mooshi belly- begging for early dinner by looking cute 🖤

I caught them being friends - I just walked into the room to see them hanging out on this cat tree together for the first time ever. They have the entire run of the house besides at feeding time but are starting to choose being near each other actively, and it warms my heart 🧡🖤
