Dim Shores

Dim Shores DIM SHORES presents short-run high-quality fiction with a dark speculative bent. Also here: .bsky.social

Beyond the verges of the ice he saw a sea that lay remotely and far beneath; and beyond the sea the low looming of a dim shore.

- Clark Ashton Smith,
"The Coming of the White Worm"

I received the second and final box of Scott Nicolay’s novella _caterpillars_ yesterday, and I begin fulfilling orders today. (Gorgeous cover art by Matthew Jaffe.)

As promised, I am giving away a copy of Scott’s rare 2015 Dim Shores novella _after_, including a set of four color prints by Michael Bukowski, to one lucky pre-order. There were 113 eligible orders; I used random.org to pick the winner, and that person is Oliver McCormick. Congrats Oliver, your Nicolay novellas will be on their way to you soon.

If you haven’t read _after_, it is reprinted in Scott’s excellent second collection And At My Back I Always Hear (2022, Word Horde).

_caterpillars_ is limited to 150 hand-numbered copies. There are currently 19 copies left in stock.

And please say hello to new intern Minx, fostered then adopted from a rescue in November. She is 2 years old and manages to be both sweetheart and dedicated sower of chaos.

Well, I received one box of Scott Nicolay's new novella _caterpillars_, but the second box is somewhere in the bowels of the USPS, last seen in Phoenix AZ. *sigh* So if you order now you still have a chance to win a copy of Scott's rare 2015 novella _after_. There are 23 copies of _caterpillars_ left in stock.

Down to 33 copies of Scott Nicolay's brand new novella _caterpillars_. I just approved the final proof and ordered the print run, hope to have books in-house and ready to ship in about two weeks.

As a reminder, everyone who pre-orders _caterpillars_ will have a shot at winning a true rarity: a recently unearthed copy of the 2nd edition of Scott's 2015 DS novella, _after_, plus a set of the four Michael Bukowski prints that came with the 1st edition.

Also, I'm losing my ability to tolerate Meta's nonsense. These new "AI profiles" would be funny if they weren't so bad for so many reasons. I foresee a time when I shut down this page and the IG page. If you want to stay informed about DS stuff, please sign up for the mailing list and/or follow me on Blu3sky (which doesn't suck yet).

Two quick updates for Scott Nicolay’s forthcoming novella _caterpillars_:

First, I added a shipping option to the web store for Canada. Readers in the Great White North can now order a copy directly through the store, postage is $9.00 USD for GlobalPost International. If you want _caterpillars_ plus something else, please continue to message me so I can get an exact postage cost for you.

Second, looks like the book will be printed and ready to ship in the second or third week of January. A little later than I hoped but it will be worth it, I promise. Seen here is the latest proof on top of a bunch of earlier proofs. I love how the latest shows off Matthew Jaffe’s beautiful cover art.

I’m putting together a newsletter to send out after the holiday season that will have the latest shipping news for _caterpillars_, as well as more info about Rhiannon Rasmussen’s 2025 short collection _The Maidens of Midnight_ (including another peek at Julia Retamales’ interior artwork) and maybe more. If you want to get on the mailing list, drop me a line.

I suspect even those who have the Dim Shores edition of "Red Skies in the Morning" will buy this book, for the two novelettes if nothing else. Congratulations Nadia!

We are absolutely thrilled to announce Nadia Bulkin's ISSUES WITH AUTHORITY, which will include her recently-released (and soldout) novella Red Skies in the Morning.

Coming September 2025 from Ghoulish Books.

Pre-orders come with a signed author sticker: https://ghoulish.rip/product/issues-with-authority/

OK, Red Skies in the Morning by Nadia Bulkin (cover art by Leslé Kieu, cover design by Michaela Waltz) is printed, in house, and ready to ship. I'm processing orders as fast as I can but it will take me a week or so to get through everything. This may have been the fastest sell-out yet, but don't despair -- I have it on good authority that a different publisher will be bringing it your eyeholes at some point in the future.

Shown here is assistant publisher Ripley, doing an excellent job of not helping me.

As many of you know, Dim Shores is a one-person operation run on a shoe-string budget. I generally don't advertise or do any marketing beyond social media posts and the sporadic DS newsletter. If there is important news -- like, say, the pre-order date for a hotly anticipated novella, or a low-stock alert about the same -- the best way to hear about it first is the newsletter. If you aren't on the mailing list but would like to be, shoot me a DM with your name and email.

Another blown-up snippet from Leslé Kieu's awesome cover art for Nadia Bulkin's haunting new novella Red Skies in the Morning. Pre-orders will open on Monday, August 26 at 10:00 PDT / 13:00 EDT / 17:00 GMT. Limited to 150 copies, don't snooze.

More early praise for Red Skies in the Morning:

“Nadia Bulkin is required reading.”
— Laird Barron, author of Not a Speck of Light (Stories)

“The work of a genius. Original, arresting—I immediately fell in love with this tech-horror world menaced by psychic disease and Video Man. Bulkin smoothly blends her talent at societal dissection and a tale of strained familial bonds into a unique vision of urban legend as contagion. A truly one-of-a-kind book.”
— Hailey Piper, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Queen of Teeth

“A fascinating, heartbreaking novella built on impending doom and terrifyingly realistic ideas plucked from the near-future. The dread is so thick you can choke on it. Do not look away. Do not close your eyes.”
— Max Booth III, author of We Need To Do Something

And if you are at NecronomiCon Providence today, don't miss Nadia's author reading at 14:00 local time – Narragansett Bayview Room, Graduate Hotel, 17th floor. Also reading in this block: Christa Carmen, Michelle Renee Lane, and veteran friend of the Shores Matthew M. Bartlett. I'll be there, though only in spirit form as my dumb body is still anchored in California.

Hey remember when DS published the lost Michael Cisco story The Knife Dance back in 2016? It also had an intro by Paul Tremblay, new author's note by Cisco, afterword by Joseph S. Pulver, Sr., art by Harry 0. Morris? Yeah that was pretty cool. Only 300 copies were printed for sale, including 100 hardcovers signed by Cisco and Harry. It sold out long ago, and I have been contacted numerous times over the years by folks desperate to get a copy. Well, a copy of the hardcover is currently available on abebooks for the bargain price of $397. I have no idea if that is a realistic price but there it is.

Coming this fall -- a new novella by Nadia Bulkin, RED SKIES IN THE MORNING. The graphic here is a small part of the in-process cover art by the dynamic Leslé Kieu, blown up so I could have a cool visual to go with this post.

The story: Paracontagions infect unsuspecting viewers of certain media. They are gruesomely fatal within seven days, unless passed along to volunteers down a continuous path of temporary hosts. Pathing agent Selene must confront the realities of this new normal when her younger sister goes missing.

Sounds good, eh? And I’m not the only one who thinks so.

“Nadia Bulkin delivers a hauntingly intense novella in which indelible evils and humanity’s impending annihilation coalesce in a shadowy world of terror and uncertainty. Red Skies in the Morning is a gripping exploration of the visual, virulent, and visceral horrors that connect us in an increasingly disconnected society, seared onto the page with Bulkin’s incandescent and unflinching style.” -- Christa Carmen, Bram Stoker Award-winning and Shirley Jackson Award-nominated author of The Daughters of Block Island

I’ll post more blurbs and art-parts over the next couple of weeks, leading up to September 1, when the book will be available for pre-order. Limited to 150 copies.

ALSO! Nadia is one of the Guests of Honor at NecronomiCon Providence 2024 next week, alongside literary legends like Billy Martin, Sheree René Thomas, and Jeff VanderMeer. Nadia will be on a couple of panels and will be doing a reading too. If you are attending, keep your peepers peeled.

ALSO ALSO! If you are attending, or doing anything else where you will be in close proximity to lots of other folks, consider wearing a mask. I caught covid last week for a second time and this strain is noticeably nastier than whichever one I had last year.
