I always say that i'm not gonna jump on the bandwagon, memorializing dead rock musicians. And every one I know is sad at losing Wayne Shorter. I never met him and he had a good run and a good end (so it goes.) But today we lost a lithe spirit, a sprightly monster of a player.

David Lindley will probably be best remembered for his expressive lap steel playing with Jackson Browne. He played the outro solo of "Stay" and most people don't know that he sang the high falsetto part at the end. We played a show or two together and he and I spent a day tooling around Cincinnati together with his road manager, Kong (another story, another time). We hit the music shops but he was most excited to visit House Of Adam, where he could stock up on his trademark polyester suits and pointy shoes. Man! he loved that store!

He told me so many secrets! some i won't share, but a couple of them still make me smile. We shared a love a weird, modified instruments (we neither of us have the gene for respecting "vintage" instruments too much. we'd change parts to make things playable, but he'd shout in a passable Jamaican accent "NO RUININ', NOW, none of that!" He told me that he used a Magnatone Lapteel on the Stay solo (people think otherwise) and that his tweed deluxe has the silver vox ac-30 speaker that we both loved. My favorite memory was him saying" Now, when you go to a guitar show, what you do, grab an empty case and make sure your wife sees you leave with it. Now, when you come home, it might be full, but she'll never know!"

then he'd flash a most impish grin.

we'll not see his like again. I hardly knew him and still I miss him.

farewell my friend.
