Nostalgic of his home of Germany, Max Bruch wrote it into his Symphony No. 3, and almost subtitled it "On the Rhine" to reflect this. Slow movements and long melodic lines help reinforce this reminiscence & sense of yearning, but he never strays from his own personal Bruch style, with the ghosts of many pieces past: his Violin Concerto No. 1, Kol Nidrei and the Scottish Fantasy to name a few. Megan Lavilla brings you this Six O'Clock Symphony, which in turn brings YOU "On the Rhine" tonight on ! https://wguc.org/listen/

Photo: Henk Monster - The cozy town of Laufenburg, Germany, across the river from Switzerland's same named Laufenburg Old Town. Both towns rest on the banks of the Rhine River, the same river that helped inspire Max Bruch's Third Symphony.

Heavily influenced by Ukrainian folk songs, it’s Peter Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 2 - which Megan Lavilla has as your Six O’Clock Symphony tonight! Three folk songs in particular stand out from the otherwise stylistic music: “Down by Mother Volga”, “Spin, O My Spinner”, and “The Crane”. The rest of the symphony is a jubilent blend of Ukrainian folk style melodies, which you can happily tap your toe to tonight at 6pm on !

Through song, the cast helps a teacher gain the confidence to face his first day standing in front of a classroom. They convince him that teaching does not have to be dull and boring, but creative and entertaining. Touching on grammar, math, and history, the familiar tunes burst into homes across the nation from 1973 to 1985 in the original cartoon series. Ryan Drake and Kelley Flaugher have more in today’s Spotlight with Elaine Diehl:

“MENDELSSOHN” is the title of the new album by pianist Isata Kanneh-Mason, on Decca Classics. The recording is devoted to music of brother and sister Felix and F***y Mendelssohn — two incredibly talented musicians who both wrote exquisite music in early 19th century Germany. Times being what they were, naturally Felix- the brother - got a lot more attention than F***y, a woman. Jonathan Bloxham leads the London Mozart Players on the album, Isata Kanneh-Mason (who knows a thing or two about talented siblings) is the soloist. It’s PIANO CONCERTO #1 in Gm by Felix Mendelssohn NEW at NOON on 90.9 WGUC (photo: Karolina Wielocha)

I don't know about you, but I think anyone could be inspired by this view on Lake Lucerne in Switzerland! For Sergei Rachmaninoff in his newly built villa in Weggis, it provided the ample motivation and productivity he needed to write his Symphony No. 3. Composed after coming home to Europe from the US, the Third Symphony is inspired by one of his most popular piano works: the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, and you can hear it tonight as our Six O'Clock Symphony on ! https://wguc.org/listen/

Tick tock tick tock, the minutes until the weekend are ticking down & our Six O'Clock Symphony can help with your anticipation. Franz Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 101 is nicknamed "The Clock" due to the "ticking" rhythm found in the second movement. The ninth of his 12 London Symphonies, it's also the 6th to last symphony Haydn ever wrote, a whopping 106 of his works in the genre total. Join Megan Lavilla for a "countdown" to the weekend tonight at 6pm on ! https://wguc.org/listen/
