OUR 75 YEAR HISTORY

King Records was an American leading independent record company and label founded in 1943 by Syd Nathan in Cincinnati, Ohio. The label owned several divisions, including Federal Records, which launched the career of James Brown, it operated until 1975.

King brought together multiple genres - country, rockabilly, R&B, with many artists recordings reaching the top of Billboard charts.

SOME ARTISTS INCLUDED: James Brown & the Famous Flames, Hank Ballard & the Midnighters, Ralph Bass, Bonnie Lou, Freddie, Jack Dupree, Little Willie John, Grandpa Jones, Jimmy Martin, Minnie Pearl, Kenny Roberts, Floyd Robinson, Mickey Rooney, Mary Small, The Stanley Brothers, Ralph Stanley, Merle Travis, Zeb Turner, Billy Ward & the Dominoes, Otis Williams & the Charms, Boots Woodall, Ruby Wright and The York Brothers.

The former King Records headquarters, at 1540 Brewster Avenue in Cincinnati, is still standing. A historical marker was placed by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008. In early 2018 the City of Cincinnati agreed on terms to acquire and restore the original building. Currently plans are being developed to compile relevant artifacts and history for a future museum experience similar to that of Sun Records and Motown Records. This is where we need your help and support.
