Today's the day! 🎅🎄

The Treasure Hunt is back and bigger than ever with over 30 participating businesses and 50 prizes. An annual tradition since 1933, the hunt was brought back by The Red River Sun and Childress Downtown Historical Association after a four-year hiatus.

Treasure Hunt tickets will be handed out from 3-5 p.m. today, Friday, Nov. 29 in front of The Red River Sun, 226 N. Main St., with help from the Childress County Heritage Museum. Each ticket will contain a number. Winning numbers will correspond to placards, placed in participating businesses. Winning tickets can be redeemed for gifts, provided by the participating businesses.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to win this year’s giveaway, a Hisense 50” R6 Series 4K UHD Roku Smart TV. Change of plans—enter-to-win tickets can be submitted beginning at 3 p.m. in front of the Palace Theater, opposed to Gordon's Furniture. The winner will be drawn at 4:45 p.m. in front of The Red River Sun. The winner need not be present to win.

Remember, tickets are limited—first come, first serve! 🎟

Prior to the hunt, the Palace Theater will show a holiday film beginning at 2 p.m., and CTX Run Club will host a one-mile Treasure Trot beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Bobcat Nutrition.

Following the hunt, guests are encouraged to attend Christmas In The Park, Childress, Texas’ Lighting of Fair Park at 6:30 p.m., which will welcome new and exciting lighted displays, as well as photos with Santa, hot chocolate, face painting, kids' crafts, hay rides and more at the Fair Park City Auditorium.

It's almost here... 🎅

The Treasure Hunt, which began in 1933, will pick back up next Friday, Nov. 29, after Thanksgiving, thanks to The Red River Sun's partnership with Childress Downtown Historical Association.

Treasure Hunt tickets will be handed out from 3-5 p.m. in front of The Red River Sun, 226 N. Main St. Each ticket will contain a number. Winning numbers will correspond to placards, placed in participating businesses. Winning tickets can be redeemed for gifts, provided by the participating businesses. This year, over 30 businesses will offer over 50 gifts.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to win this year’s giveaway, a Hisense 50” R6 Series 4K UHD Roku Smart TV. Enter-to-win tickets can be submitted in front of Gordon’s Furniture, 222 Commerce St. NW, from 3-5 p.m. The winner will be drawn at 4:45 p.m. in front of The Red River Sun. The winner need not be present to win. The giveaway prize can be scheduled to be redeemed at a later date at The Red River Sun should the winner be absent.

Prior to the hunt, CTX Run Club will host the Treasure Trot Jingle Bell Run, a one-mile walk or run, beginning at 2:30 p.m. at Bobcat Nutrition.

“Shake off those Thanksgiving feasts with our festive one-mile walk or run,” event organizer Ashley Ramos said. “We are so excited to be a part of this wonderful event, and we hope to see you all there.”

For more information regarding the Treasure Trot, call or text Ramos at 817-856-9702.

Following the hunt, guests are encouraged to attend Christmas in the Park’s Lighting of Fair Park at dusk, which will welcome new and exciting additions.

“Once again, we are planning to make Fair Park sparkle,” Christmas in the Park President Kayla Meyer said. “Last year, many of our older displays were updated with LED lights for what we believe was our best year ever. This year, we hope to replace more of the older lights and add lights to the fencing around the inside of the park.”

“Locals might remember the sleigh pulled by reindeer on the lawn of the Harry Thaten property for many years,” Meyer added. “His family has graciously gifted this item to Christmas in the Park. We will also have the addition of a Cinderella carriage, created by John and D’Anna Oldham.”

Additionally, inside of the Fair Park City Auditorium, guests can grab a picture with Santa, as well as enjoy hot chocolate, kids’ crafts, face painting and more.

“To go along with the lighting, we have a fun festival planned in the city auditorium,” Meyer said. “It’s fun for the whole family—it’s Christmas the old-fashioned way.”

We hope to see everyone there! 🎄

11/19/2024

Stran and Jennifer Smith are thrilled to announce the grand opening of their new retail concept store, 1930 Remnant, located at the historic corner of U.S. Hwy 287 and Main St. in downtown Childress. The grand opening event will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 23, with a ribbon cutting at 11:30 a.m. There will also be food trucks from HTeaO and Chips BBQ available to celebrate the event. After three years of dedicated renovations to the historic Rucker Building/Visitor Center, this unique shopping destination is ready to welcome visitors.

1930 Remnant will showcase a curated selection of STS Ranchwear and other brands that reflect the Smiths' deep-rooted love for Texas and their passion for the western lifestyle. The store will feature a blend of products from designers that Stran and Jennifer have admired throughout their years in the western industry.

"Jennifer's designer talents are not just evident in the handbags she creates,” Stran said. “She made every part of the space a visual representation of the brand and our legacy on the ranch. Though it was a long, drawn-out process, we enjoyed collaborating on this project together.”

"One thing I've learned through our 20-plus year marriage is that Stran can fix just about anything,” Jennifer added. “This renovation was a testament to that."

The opening of 1930 Remnant marks not just a culmination of hard work but also the beginning of a continuing journey.

"This has been a true labor of love, and it will continue to evolve even after the opening,” Jennifer said. “I have so many plans for this space—more ideas than time, actually! During the pandemic, we felt a calling to do something larger than ourselves for the community. When we discovered this building with the warehouse attached, we knew it was the place we had dreamed of. We hope the revenue from the store will help us provide meaningful events in the warehouse that encourage, inspire, and help cultivate a healthy community."

The name 1930 Remnant is inspired by a promise found in 2 Kings 19:30-31, embodying the spirit of ranchers and cowboys. It embraces the idea of descendants or "Remnants" who take root and rise up to bear fruit across generations.

The story began with the adventurous journey of Will T Smith, known affectionately as "Papa," who, in 1930, boarded a train to California in search of work. Faced with unexpected encounters with outlaws and renegades, Papa experienced a divine revelation that his destiny was to be his own boss. With newfound determination, he returned to Texas and dedicated his life to building the Lazy S Ranch in Tell.

As inheritors of Papa's spirit and unwavering resolve, the Smith family remains resilient and steadfast, much like the land that inspired him. Their mission is to foster and cultivate success for those who share the frontier spirit. They invite the community to join them in honoring Papa's legacy, embracing today's challenges, and forging a path toward a promising future. The store's logo subtly incorporates the Lazy S brand with the year 1930, paying homage to this enduring legacy.

Join Stran and Jennifer Smith in celebrating the grand opening of 1930 Remnant and explore a space where tradition meets innovation. Visit the store to experience firsthand the passion and creativity that have brought this vision to life. Regular store hours will be 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday.

The Texas Department of Transportation Childress District held the 2024 End the Streak press conference to raise awareness on the number of fatalities on Texas roadways each year Friday, Nov. 15 at the Childress County Courthouse.

"The last fatality free day on our roadways was Nov. 2, 2000," stated TxDOT Public Information Officer Ginger Wilson. "Since that time, over 84,000 lives have been lost, including more than 350 in the Childress District. We believe we can end the streak of fatalities on Texas roadways, but it is going to take each and every one of us to make that possible."

TxDOT Traffic Safety Specialist Nicole Tyler and Cottle County Maintenance Supervisor Ron Gilbert also spoke at the event, which welcomed local law enforcement officers and first responders.
