Internet Archive's San Francisco Scanning Center destroyed by a fire. Luckily most of the hard copies were offsite, and of the physical items in the Center, half had been digitized. But still, what a loss. Ninestars and State and University Library, Denmark sign historic digitisation deal to digitise 32 million historical newspaper pages in 2014-2016, in one of the largest digitisation initiatives in Europe

BANGALORE, SEPTEMBER 10, 2013: Ninestars Information Technologies Ltd., a leading digital content solutions provider, announced today that it has been selected by The State and University Library, Aarhus, Denmark for the digitisation of 32 million Danish newspaper pages. The digitisation project, one of the largest of its kind in the industry, has come about partly on the basis of a special appropriation under the Danish Budget Law, and it has a total grant of DKK 23 million.

A short article about scanning paper clutter to get it out of your house. Includes info on the Fujitsu ScanSnap, a really small little scanner that also OCRs text, making all documents keyword searchable!

To rid our home of the unnecessary papers, we invested in the Fujitsu ScanSnap (available for the Mac and PC) and scanned all of the papers that weren't vital for us to have in paper form.

Just met with a new client -- a local non profit called Fight the Inferno. It is an organization devoted to HIV/AIDS services and education on Chicago's West Side. We spent a couple of hours working on the founder's computer and it was good. So happy to be involved with this organization!

The monastery that claims to be the oldest in the world ­— not destroyed, not abandoned in 17 centuries — has begun digitizing its ancient manuscripts for the use of scholars. A new library to facilitate the process is about five years away. The librarian, Father Justin, says the monastery’s library will grow an internet database of first-millennium manuscripts..."

Like other researchers and policy makers, Ms. Boyd said the initial push to close the digital divide did not anticipate how computers would be used for entertainment.

“We failed to account for this ahead of the curve,” she said.

As access to devices has spread, children in poorer families are spending considerably more time using them for purposes other than for education.
