6 Songs (and Moments) That Changed My Life 🎶
1. 🥁 Playing Drums in Church and WBMX’s Original Hot Mix 5 (1983)
This is where it all truly began. As a kid, I played the drums in church and started listening to WBMX’s Original Hot Mix 5. I would practice the drums along with their mixes, and it was during this time I learned to edit analog tape—long before I ever touched DJ equipment. Learning to edit and understanding music structure at such a young age laid the foundation for everything I’ve done since.
2. 🎥 ‘Beat Street’ Movie Soundtrack (1984)
Watching this movie was life-changing. The DJ scenes, especially the Megamix DJ Double K mixtape and Burning Spear, were mesmerizing. It showed me the art of DJing and sparked my passion for it.
3. 📻 WBMX 102.7 Radio - Julian ‘Jumpin’ Perez Mix (1985)
Tuning into these legendary mixes on WBMX was a pivotal moment for me. Julian’s skill, energy, and creativity ignited my desire to pursue DJing seriously.
4. 🎤 Trinere - ‘I’ll Be All You Ever Need’ (1986)
Growing up in grade school, this song was everywhere. Every car on 26th Street blasted it loud, and it was the first time I truly saw and heard the power of music to bring people together.
5. 🎙️ Eric B. & Rakim, Ice-T, LL Cool J, Ghetto Boys, Eazy-E, and NWA (1986-1989)
These artists defined the soundtrack of my life when I was a DJ for a local neighborhood rap group. From LL Cool J’s energy and charisma to NWA’s raw storytelling, they fueled my passion for hip-hop. Their beats and messages inspired me to push boundaries and showed me how music could give a voice to a generation.
6. 🎧 DJ Scratch - House Music Basement Party in Little Village, Chicago (1989)
Seeing my childhood friend DJ Scratch spinning house music at a basement party was unforgettable. That moment showed me what was possible, and Scratch even took the time to teach me the ropes. I’ll always be grateful for that.
