Memo’s was forced to shut it’s doors last Saturday! Yesterday morning Alderman Byron Sigcho Lopez held a press conference to bring attention to the closing of 1 local business, Memo’s Hot Dogs (1447 W. 18th St.) and to raise awareness to the struggles that some of the oldest establishments en Pilsen are facing. The owners of Gloria’s Tacos, Gloria and Ofelio Torres were also present to show their support as their business is facing similar problems after being on 18th St. for over 35 years! Memo’s co-owner, Jeanette Garza says trouble started for the business when an inspector passed by and saw the awning being repainted. The owners (who also own the building) did not have a permit because they were unaware that they needed a permit to make updates to their awning.
With the help of a contractor and the Alderman’s office, they attempted to pull the permit but were then faced with an additional problem. The city had taken issue with the mural painted on the side of the building (“public way”) and required that they paint over all of the artwork on the building and again apply for the appropriate permits.
The fines have been piling up for the Garza family and they have not been able to renew their business license.
The owners posted about the closing on social media and were slammed with phone orders until they had to close early due to equipment failures. Follow @memoshotdogs to stay up to date on their story!
