As documentary filmmakers we know that truth is often more extraordinary than fiction. Last week, in a remarkable turn of events, Leonard Peltier—the Native American activist who spent nearly five decades in prison—was granted clemency.

And TODAY the documentary film, Free Leonard Peltier makes its WORLD PREMIERE at Sundance! 🎥

Co-directed by Jesse Short Bull and David France and produced by David, Jhane Myers , Paul McGuire, and Bird Runningwater, this powerful documentary explores the 50-year story of activism surrounding Peltier’s contentious conviction, the FBI actions that led to it, and now his release.

We’re especially proud and privileged that Jhane is a mentor for the 2024/25 Hulu/Kartemquin Accelerator.

FROM THE FILM TEAM: “As we prepare for the premiere of FREE LEONARD PELTIER...on January 27 at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, we are excited to shift our goal from advocating for Leonard’s release to celebrating his liberation from a prison cell. It is a profound honor to rewrite the ending of this story and we look forward to sharing our film with the world in the coming year.”

The film will have its world premiere on Jan 27th, with more screenings over the coming days. Screening times and tickets at sundance.org

We’re keeping things international for this week’s Film Friday with Justine Nagan’s Typeface (2009). This beautiful film will be screened in Istanbul on Jan 30th as part of Salt’s Paste-up, Print! program.

THE FILM: The Hamilton Wood Type Museum in Two Rivers, WI personifies cultural preservation, rural re-birth and the lineage of American graphic design. At Hamilton, international artisans meet retired craftsmen and together navigate the convergence of modern design and traditional technique.

THE PROGRAM: Organized as part of the exhibition Designer’s Note, the screening program Point, Paste-up, Print! explores the significant changes in design since the 1980s. From manual work within conventional design practices to the advent of computerized technology, the program offers a close look at a transformative period that has shaped the evolving role of design in bookmaking. Featuring eight documentary films, the selection brings together diverse practices from North and South America, Europe, and the Far East.
