The song was inspired by Phil Lynott’s fascination with Irish history and Celtic mythology, and ironically was to become his epitaph. Go dtuga Dia suaimhneas da anam.

‘Róisín Dubh (Black Rose)’
Phil Lynott

Tell me the legends of long ago
When the kings and queens would dance
In the realm of the Black Rose
Play me the melodies I want to know
So I can teach my children, oh

Pray tell me the story of young Cú Chulainn
How his eyes were dark his expression sullen
And how he’d fight and always won
And how they cried when he was fallen

In the next week is the 100th anniversary of the British attack on Croke Park during the Dublin-Tipp match. While this is slightly outside the Fenian era, the GAA had a strong presence in this city. This short film (5 minutes) is beautifully well done.

“On 21 November 1920, 14 people went to a match in Croke park. They never came home. 100 years on, we remember our Bloody Sunday dead. - the GAA remembers. https://t.co/s2eR4iJIi3”

Gorgeous piece of cinematography; the language, acting, scenery, and history. This pre-dates the Fenian movement but walks us right to that point while depicting the horrors of genocidal starvation in a country full of food.

Free on Netflix, playing now.

This page was founded to honor the inseparable and unacknowledged bond between Fenianism and Chicago area. In many cases the very roots of Fenianism are found here (Denieffe, Devoy, R O'S Burke, the Catalpa). As much as we can the moderators do attempt to keep this the focus of all posts, with some respectful digressions.

I was recently alerted of a post regarding slavery. Peer-reviewed studies of the Irish experience with this immoral chapter in human history do not support those who claim the Irish experience was more severe than that of Africans brought to the United States against their will. The contrary is true. This shouldn't be a contest to begin with, but such posts occasionally make their way on to this page. I am certain they are well intended, but unfounded.

Irish Republicanism, as revived by the Young Irelanders, from which Fenianism rose, paid no heed to race, religion, or class. Fenianism had one agenda; I would like to respect that creed as much as possible here. If someone can cite peer-reviewed studies with footnotes and sources discussing the Irish experience with slavery --and its ties to the Chicago area, I would be absolutely fascinated to see them.

Many thanks. NPF

Several days after the end of the Dublin Rising, the Chicago Tribune published a small piece on George and Richard Barrett of 4622 Magnolia Ave. These two young men had been students of St. Edna's School outside Dublin and spoke well schoolmaster Patrick Pearse, who had led the Rising as commander-in-chief. Within days of this publishing, however, Pearse, his brother Willie, and Thomas MacDonagh (each also of St Edna's), had been executed. The Barretts would have had rich insight of this rebellion, numerous students had taken part in the fighting and were possibly familiar to the brothers, but we find no real mention of them or their fates afterwards.
