Trugoy the Dove/Plug 2 (born David Jolicoeur) died two years ago today at the age of 54. The first two De La Soul albums (along with fellow Native Tongue collective trio Jungle Brothers' Done by the Forces of Nature) were in constant rotation for me during my final high school years. I only saw De La Soul live once: at Industry (Pontiac MI, RIP) with Souls of Mischief if memory serves. Groundbreaking and hugely influential.

If you've listened to my show at all over the past 15 years, you've heard me say it repeatedly: the New York Dolls 1973 debut album is the greatest American rock and roll album ever released. David Johansen is in rough patch, show him some L-U-V and pick up a shirt (like I did).

Before forming the more funk-leaning/jam band-friendly Spearhead in 1994, Michael Franti was half of The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy (formerly The Beatnigs). The band only released one album (1992's Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury), but it was/still remains far ahead of its time. Criminally overlooked and unfortunately all too prescient.

I had just turned sixteen when Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back was released. Yo! Bum Rush the Show from 1987 was a solid release, but PE's sophomore album was when the group fully arrived: it was just as pi**ed off as the punk & metal I was already fully immersed in but coming from a NYC black perspective. Still one of the hardest rap albums ever released (and I still have my original LP!).

I've been on a big James Baldwin kick as of late and just rewatched the 2016 documentary I Am Not Your Negro, uncomfortable and essential viewing (especially given our current political climate). My favorite passage from The Fire Next Time (1963):

“It seems to me that one ought to rejoice in the fact of death-- ought to decide, indeed, to earn one's death by confronting with passion the conundrum of life. One is responsible to life: It is the small beacon in that terrifying darkness from which we come and to which we shall return. One must negotiate this passage as nobly as possible, for the sake of those who are coming after us.”

Baldwin was fierce, fearless, and as relevant today as he was 60+ years ago.

Fishbone were the best live band on the planet in the late 80's/early 90's, full stop. I saw them numerous times at Saint Andrew's Hall in Detroit MI, it wasn't just a band playing: it was a full-on nonstop 90 minute party. The energy they put forth night after night was absolutely inhuman and it was impossible to not get caught up in it. I still have yet to see another band that could match the intensity of their early live shows.

Sometime in the mid 90's (1995?) myself, Mike White of The Projection Booth Podcast fame and another long-time fan had the honor of seeing comedian/musician/actor/filmmaker/producer/etc Rudy Ray Moore perform stand-up before a screening of The Avenging Disco Godfather at The Magic Bag in Ferndale MI. We'd all been watching his movies/listening to his albums for years so this was a HUGE night for us. Moore self-financed his landmark 1975 film Dolemite, which is still considered one of the greatest blaxploitation films of all time. I still have the autographed t-shirt from 30 years ago buried somewhere in storage.

This is the trailer for the one and only original Rudy Ray Moore Dolemite movie from 1975. Find lots of great movies like this at http://90lostminutes.com

I just recently discovered that my mother (who is now in her 80's) saw Sammy Davis Jr. perform live in Windsor ON when she was a teenager. She still swears that he was the most amazing performer she's ever seen and even met him afterwards. Singer, actor, musician, comedian, dancer, Grammy/Emmy award winner...Sammy was arguably the most accomplished entertainer of all time (and the most talented member of the Rat Pack, hands down). No one else comes close.

I was gifted the self-titled/Maggot Brain LP's by Funkadelic by my best friend when I was 15 years old (both still reside in my collection). Up until that point I was largely only familiar with more radio-friendly funk/soul, hearing the opening track on the S/T album for the first time was another life-changing moment. Still the heaviest groove ever put to wax.

Chicago's own Cyclone Temple were one of the most criminally underrated thrash bands of the early 90's. Guitarist Gee Fulltone could hang with (and surpass) any of the big names at the time when it came to riffs that would f**k you up for days. 1991's I Hate Therefore I Am was in constant rotation my first couple years of college and I was lucky enough to see Cyclone Temple (twice!) at Blondie's (Detroit MI, RIP) in front of a small but enthusiastic crowd. Thank you for the music, Greg.
